Nearly a week has passed since the victory in Mainz and the Werder players are packing their bags in readiness for another away day. This time the destination is Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena and the opponent finds itself in a similar predicament to that of Werder, somewhat lower down the league table than many would have expected at the start of the season. The winter signings of Malli, Ntep and Bazoer clearly shows the intentions of the Lower Saxony club, but they haven’t yet had the desired effect. Werder head coach Alexander Nouri is well aware of the “extreme quality” in the Wolfsburg side. “Their team is packed with extreme quality. When you look at the table, you think this team is below where it should be. We know what a difficult and demanding game it will be.”

The potential importance of set pieces for Werder, the quality of Wolfsburg’s attacking players and Werder’s growing reputation as a force away from home this season will all be discussed.

Did you know that...

… Bremen’s recent routes to success could again be key? Theodor Gebre Selassie, Max Kruse, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Delaney – four very different players who have scored Werder’s last four goals – all from set pieces. In VfL Wolfsburg, Werder face a team who have had trouble defending dead ball situations. Three of the last five goals Wolfsburg have conceded were from set pieces. This is a good time to remember the game between the sides earlier on in the season…

… in the first meeting between the sides, Werder recorded their first win of the season? And, of course, the winner came from a set piece!  In spite of their dominance, Werder fell behind midway through the second half after an own goal by Robert Bauer. However, thanks to Alexander Nouri’s magic touch, Lennart Thy levelled the score in the 86th minute and debutant Niklas Schmidt headed home a Gebre-Selassie corner in the 90th minute to give Werder the victory.

…a Werder win in Wolfsburg would take Bremen level on points with the Lower Saxony side? Until now, Wolfsburg have won only six Bundesliga games this season. That’s not good enough for a team packed with internationals and with ambitions of finishing in the European places. If Werder were to win on Friday evening, they would go level on points with Wolfsburg and suck their opponent  into the relegation battle. After winning three games in a row at the end of 2016, Wolfsburg have lost four of their last five since the turn of the year.

… Wolfsburg have the worst goal return at this stage of a Bundesliga season in their history? So far this season, Wolfsburg have only scored 19 goals in 21 games. They’ve never had such a poor goal return after two-thirds of a Bundesliga season. The two clean sheets that Werder have kept this season have both come away from home, 1-0 in Berlin and 2-0 in Mainz.

… Werder must not shy away from this away game? The previously mentioned away wins in Berlin and Mainz will be in the minds of the Werder players, who have won seven of their last eight Bundesliga points away from home. Alexander Nouri’s side have only lost one of their last five matches away from the Weser Stadium (3-2 in Augsburg).   Von den letzten fünf Bundesliga-Auftritten abseits der Weser verlor das Team von Alexander Nouri nur einmal (2:3 in Augsburg). Serge Gnabry has played a big part in this, as only one of his eight goals this season has come at home.

... Wolfgang Stark will referee the match? This will be the third time that Stark will referee Werder this season. Last time was in the 1-1 draw with Köln. Out of the 32 Werder games that Stark has refereed, the Green and Whites have won 14, drawn 8 and lost 10.
