They would have hoped for a successful start to the week in Freiburg, as before SCF travelled to Bremen to face SV Werder on Saturday (29th Oct, 15:30 CEST), they came up against second division side SV Sandhausen in the DFB Cup and suffered a disappointing loss on penalties. Despite the fact this week’s opponents have already played 120 minutes during the week, coach Alex Nouri doesn’t see this as an advantage to his team. “I don’t think it’ll have a big impact. Freiburg’s focus is very clearly on the Bundesliga and you could see that through the fact they rested many key players.” The coach highlighted other things too, stating in Thursday’s press conference that his team should concentrate on their own strengths and bring as much passion as they have done in the previous two home encounters. “If we get the fans on our side, we’ll certainly be in a good position to be successful,” Nouri said assuredly.

Find out below in what statistic SVW outdo Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern with regards to Saturday’s opponents, why Freiburg prefer playing at home – despite their cup exit this week - and which of the visitors’ current players and ex-Green-White could reach a personal milestone at the weekend.

Did you know...

... Werder have scored in every Bundesliga home game for over a year? The last time the Green-Whites failed to score at the Weser-Stadion was in a 1-0 defeat to FC Bayern on the 17th of October, 2015. There have been 16 games since then in which SVW have scored at least one goal. This is Werder’s longest run of scoring at home since April 2004, back then it was Ailton, Klasnic and Co. scoring the goals in a run of 16 home matches, and in the same year that Werder won their famous double.

…home specialists Freiburg struggle on the road? SC Freiburg have won four Bundesliga home games so far this season. In other words, they have a full complement of points at home. However, Freiburg have also lost every away game they’ve played in the Bundesliga this season. They’ve scored just three and conceded ten on the road. Only Darmstadt 98 have a worse away record in the league, as they have an inferior goal difference. Including results from last season as well, Freiburg haven’t managed an away win in ten games (three draws and seven defeats).

…Frank Baumann celebrates his birthday on Saturday?
Werder’s sporting director will turn 41 years old on Saturday. As a Werder player, Baumann’s record against Freiburg in the Bundesliga was very impressive. In nine meetings, Werder’s former captain recorded six wins, one draw and two defeats. It would be the ideal birthday present for Baumann, should this impressive record continue with him in his new role.

...Freiburg have conceded the most amount of goals against Werder?
Neither Borussia Dortmund nor Bayern München match up to Werder in this statistic. SC Freiburg have conceded 76 goals in 32 games against SVW. By way of comparison, Saturday’s away side have conceded 73 goals against BVB and 67 against FCB, respectively. In any case, Freiburg’s record against Bremen is nothing to write home about. In the 32 Bundesliga duels between the two sides, the upcoming visitors have won just seven, with the points being shared on five occasions. On average, there have been 3.66 goals a game when the two sides have faced each other.

...there are two ex-Bremen players in the SCF squad? One is Nils Petersen and the other is Aleksandar Ignjovski. Petersen, who was part of the German Olympic team, returns to Werder for the first time in 18 months in a Freiburg shirt, having scored 18 times in 72 appearances for the Green-Whites. One thing that Petersen will be able to do on his return to his old club is to celebrate his 100th Bundesliga appearance. Aleksandar Ignjovski also made the move to Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer after three years in Bremen.

…the opposition have put in the least amount of crosses of all Bundesliga teams? “In the middle!”,will be Christian Streich’s motto to his players, at least when he takes a look at the statistics. Freiburg have put just 75 crosses into the box. Bayern Munich, in comparison, have crossed the ball in 151 times, more than twice as much.

…Guido Winkmann will be the referee in charge? The 42-year-old policeman from Kerken has been refereeing Bundesliga games since 2008 and will be officiating his 102nd Bundesliga match on Saturday. The Green-Whites lost the last match for which he was in charge 5-0 to Bayern Munich in March of this year. However SVW have come out on top on five of those occasions, while they have also drawn three and lost seven times. Winkmann’s assistants on Saturday will be Christian Bandurski and Arno Blos. The fourth official is Frank Willenborg.
