“It’s about time we picked up some points!” It is not just Zlatko Junuzovic that knows this, after he uttered those words at the press conference on Thursday. The rest of the team are also well aware of this after three defeats in 2017. However when it comes to the team’s next opponent, Borussia Mönchengladbach, who visit the Weser-Stadion on Saturday, 11th February, their form has by contrast improved hugely. “Gladbach are a team that obviously have the wind in their backs,” warned Werder coach Alexander Nouri ahead of the game against the Fohlenelf, who have really lifted themselves away from the relegation battle with victories over Leverkusen and Freiburg. Werder and Gladbach were actually on the same number of points come the winter break. However three games later, Borussia now have a seven point advantage over the Green-Whites. Once again, it is high time that Werder picked up some points.

The following summarises why the Fohlenelf’s record at the Weser-Stadion can fill Bremen with confidence, which players the away side will be without on Saturday and how Alexander Nour’s reunion with Gladbach coach Dieter Hecking is connected to so many positive memories.

Did you know, that…

… the Weser-Stadion is not a venue that the Fohlenelf have enjoyed coming to? Mönchengladbach have only won once in their last 26 outings in Werder! We want to keep it that way…

… the Fohlenelf had a very poor away record in the last calendar year? Former head coach Andre Schubert’s team could only manage one win last year from 16 away games. They managed just three draws, losing the other twelve of those fixtures, the weakest away record of all teams still in the Bundesliga for 2016.

… the best player for Gladbach so far in the new year will not be available on Saturday? Lars Stindl has score three goals in his last two games and has been a key figure in Borussia’s revival since the winter break. The Fohlenelf captain however will not feature against Werder Bremen. Stindl picked up his fifth yellow card last weekend against Freiburg and is therefore suspended for the match at the Weser-Stadion. Moreover SVW are something of a favourite for Lars Stindl to play against, having scored more goals against no other team (six times), and has also beaten Gladbach seven times with Karlsruhe, Hannover and Gladbach.

… describing the last few meetings between the two sides as “packed with goals” is actually an understatement?
Werder Bremen have travelled to Borussia-Park three times in a row to face the Fohlenelf, twice in the Bundesliga and once in the DFB Cup. There have been an incredible 18 goals in these three fixtures. That’s six goals per game on average! VfL comfortably came out on top when the two teams met in the Bundesliga, whereas it was SVW who triumphed 4-3 in a thrilling cup tie. The Green-Whites also won the last match at the Weser-Stadion. Aron Jóhannsson and now a Borussia man, Jannik Vestergaard, got the goals for Werder in this 2-1 win in August 2015.

… Mönchengladbach have recently struggled for goals in the first half?
Gladbach are now without a goal in the first half in six Bundesliga games. The Fohlenelf have not had a goal-drought like that since 2011, when they failed to score in the first 45 minutes in seven consecutive games. Borussia were able to stop this negative run of form in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday at second-tier side Greuther Fürth as Oscar Wendt and Thorgan Hazard found the back of the net.

… Alexander Nouri celebrated his first Bundesliga victory against his opposite number this weekend?

Dieter Hecking will sit on the away bench at the Weser-Stadion on Saturday for the second time this season. The 52-year-old lost 2-1 with VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 5. It was Alexander Nouri’s second Bundesliga match and the Werder coach was able to celebrate his first success in the job thanks to a last-minute header from Theodor Gebre Selassie.

… two players will be facing their former clubs? It will be a double reunion for Max Kruse. For a start, he comes up against Borussia, with whom the 28-year-old managed to make the national team, and on the other hand it is also a reunion between himself and Dieter Hecking, with whom he worked at VfL Wolfsburg before his move to the Weser. Jannik Vestergaard went the opposite way. He left Werder in the summer of 2016 for Gladbach. The Dane was at Bremen for one and a half years and his return to the Weser-Stadion on Saturday will be his first since he left.
