Things couldn’t really be going much better for Werder at the moment. The Green-Whites currently occupy sixth place in the Bundesliga and will be trying to defend this position on Friday evening in Köln (20:30 CEST). Despite the recent success, no one is getting ahead of themselves. Everyone knows how difficult the remaining games will be as Werder push for a European place. “We have to give everything to defend this position. But we can certainly be proud of this run. We’ve come through a lot of difficult situations over the last few months,” said Werder vice-captain Zlatko Junuzovic. Werder already have a plan in place for how they are going to overcome FC Köln, who themselves are fighting to finish in the top six, on Friday. “On Friday it will come down to the team being as up for it as they have been in the last few weeks. We want to win again in Köln,” said sporting director Frank Baumann. Werder’s vice-captain added, “Our biggest strength is our togetherness. We believe in ourselves and we take that self-belief onto the pitch.”

Reasons why both teams will be looking forward to Friday’s meeting, Max Kruse’s special motivation and which landmark Robert Bauer will be celebrating is all discussed below.

Did you know that...

…neither side is particularly good on a Friday? Werder have only won one of their last twelve matches played on a Friday. The Green-Whites won on a Friday night on matchday 22 of this season against 2-1 against Wolfsburg. Köln have a similarly poor record on a Friday, having only won one of their last seven Friday games. They won 3-0 against Freiburg on a Friday in September 2016. Hopefully Werder will put an end to their Friday curse this week as they go into the game as one of the in-form teams in the Bundesliga.

… the record between Werder and Köln couldn’t be more even? From their previous 89 meetings, both teams have 33 victories to their name, with 23 draws.

… Fin Bartels can look forward to seeing old friends and Robert Bauer has reason to celebrate?
Bartels played alongside Köln‘s Matthias Lehmann and Thomas Kessler at St. Pauli. Robert Bauer will play his 50th Bundesliga match should he be selected on Friday.

… Werder’s recent away games have been goal fests?
There have been a total of 17 goals in Werder’s last three away matches. That’s an average of nearly six goals per game. Werder have also scored in each of their last 14 away matches with a total of 27 goals in these games. However, last year’s meeting in Köln finished 0-0.

… a few Werder players need to be careful? Robert Bauer, Theodor Gebre Selassie, Niklas Moisander, Milos Vejkovic and Florian Grillitsch are all just one yellow card away from a suspension. Yuya Osako is Köln’s only player who risks a ban should he pick up a booking on Friday.
