The players need to show character now. The Green-Whites are aiming to finally get their first points of 2017 after four defeats on the trot. Alexander Nouri’s men take on 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday, 18th February at 15:30 CET. They are a team “with a lot of quality on the counterattack,” emphasised Nouri ahead of this crucial away fixture. “We need to be compact and must not allow Mainz to hit us on the counterattack,” warned the Werder coach. Frank Baumann once again stressed the significance of this game. “Anyone who looks at the table knows that we are in a challenging position,” said the chief executive.

WERDER.DE sums up why Werder need to be particularly careful at crosses and set-pieces, the memories that stick out most about Mainz in Clemens Fritz mind and which statistics suggest a victory is possible for Werder.

Did you know that...

... Mainz have only won one of their last nine home matches against Werder?
Believe it or not, Werder have won six of their matches in the Rheinhessen in that time, whereas the Zerofivers have won just one of those encounters. Mainz in fact only have a worse points total at home against Bayern München than Werder.

... Mainz have actually been extremely impressive at home recently? The 2-0 victory over Augsburg represented their fifth Bundesliga home win this season. Of their ten competitive matches on home turf this season, Schmidt’s side have only lost to Bayern Munich. Aside from that, they have six wins, while it has ended all square on three occasions.

... Werder should be particularly wary of long balls? Mainz scored their tenth header of the season last Saturday, more than any other Bundesliga team. Moreover, former Werder man Levin Öztunali, who is one player to have hit the target with his head for the Zerofivers, made a total of 41 appearances for the Green-Whites between January 2015 and June 2016.

…Alexander Nouri made his Bundesliga debut against Mainz? In their first match under the 37-year-old, Werder took the lead with a thunderous long-range shot from Izet Hajrovic in the 12th minute and dominated their guests for large parts of the game. However, just before the end, Yunus Malli, who is now at Wolfsburg, and Pablo De Blasis ensured a 2-1 defeat for Werder with very late goals. In addition, Nouri was banished to the stands during a turbulent end to the match. “Of course, the unpleasant picture that I gained from the stand at the end of that match is still in my mind, but I also learnt a lot from this game,” Nouri said looking back.

… Bojan Krkic und Niklas Moisander know each other from the Dutch Eredivisie? Mainz’s Bojan Krkic played for Ajax during the 2013/14 season alongside Werder’s central defender Niklas Moisander. They won the Dutch Super Cup together and also went on to lift the league trophy at the end of that season. Thereafter, Bojan’s loan with Ajax ended and he returned to Barcelona, but Moisander played one more year for the Dutch kings.

... Frank Baumann und Clemens Fritz share a fond memory of Mainz? The former and current captain of SVW were both on the field when Werder inflicted Mainz’s heaviest ever Bundesliga defeat on 27.10.2006. It remains to this day the time that the Zerofivers have let in six goals in a Bundesliga match. For SVW, Miroslav Klose, Aaron Hunt, Diego and Naldo were all on the scoresheet. The host‘s consolation goal was scored by Mimoun Azaouagh.
