Werder’s head coach Alexander Nouri spoke of "good omens" ahead of the game against 1. FC Köln on Saturday, 17th December (kick-off at 15:30CET). “There’s a great atmosphere in training and the quality of the sessions has been, as usual, very high. And after the impressive display against Hertha, our confidence is growing,” said Nouri. However, it is not just the impressive performances of recent weeks that has created a sense of hope for a successful end to the year at the Weser Stadion, but also the most recent matches at home to the side from Cologne.

Find out below what previous stats are in favour of SV Werder, which Billy Goats’ player is yet to beat the Green-Whites and what FC St. Pauli has to do with Saturday’s fixture.

Did you know that...

... The head-to-head record between these sides in the Bundesliga could not be more balanced? Hold on tight, here’s a whistle-stop tour of the history between SV Werder and FC Köln. The Green-Whites have met the Red and Whites 88 times in the German top flight. Bremen have 33 wins to their name but so do the Billy Goats. Those of you quick with numbers will work out there have therefore been 22 draws. It’s almost a shame that this perfectly balanced record has to be broken this matchday. And just so you know, both ties last season ended in a draw (0-0 and 1-1).

... Köln have not enjoyed their recent trips to Bremen? The following record is, on the other hand, much less balanced. Ten of the Billy Goats’ last 13 trips to the Weser have seen them return to the Cathedral City empty handed, most recently in the second round of the DFB Cup last season. Köln have a meagre five points out of a possible 36 from their visits up north since 1997, and have only conceded more goals in the top flight against Bayern (93) than against SVW (91).

... Köln have dropped away a little after their impressive start to the season? They were unbeaten in their opening seven games of the season, including a point in Munich, and had 15 points on the board – their best start to a Bundesliga campaign in 27 years. But the Billy Goats’ form in the next seven games is on somewhat of a downward trend. Peter Stöger’s side have just eight points from those seven games, including just two victories.

... Köln’s top scorer seems to be struggling? The Cologne side’s impressive start to the season was largely down to the form of Anthony Modeste. The Frenchman already has 12 Bundesliga goals this campaign and has had a hand in 13 of Köln’s 19 league goals in 2016/17. But Werder’s next opponents have found the back of the net just once in their last three league games (Rudnevs in the 1-1 draw with Dortmund). The Billy Goats’ forward now faces his personal bogey team in the form of Werder Bremen. Modeste is yet to beat SVW in five attempts with Köln and former club Hoffenheim. The 28-year-old is also yet to score against the Green-Whites.

... Five former St. Pauli players will be reunited on Saturday? Max Kruse, Fin Bartels and assistant coach Florian Bruns all previously played for FC St. Pauli in their last top-flight campaign in 2010/11. Two of their former teammates will be amongst the opposition on Saturday. Köln keeper Thomas Kessler and captain Matthias Lehmann all used to play with the Bremen trio in the Brown-White of St. Pauli. Kessler will be in goal for the injured Timo Horn on Saturday but Lehmann will only be watching from the stands due to a ligament injury.

... Experience was possibly the recipe for success in Werder’s win at Hertha? Bremen’s starting XI in Berlin contained a total of 1511 Bundesliga appearances – vastly experienced. The average age was just over 30 – obviously not a bad thing as Werder’s oldest starting side for 20 years picked up the club’s first away win of the season. It’s now possible that the average age of the side put out against Köln one week later may just be seven days older.

... SVW will wear their Christmas tree kit again? The Green-Whites have worn a special festive kit for their final home game of the year for the last 14 years. And the Christmas kit has often brought the side good luck...
