The result in last week’s Nordderby, which was not wholly satisfying, is in the past and Werder’s next closest competition in the table awaits them in the next game. “The three points are all that matters,” affirmed chief executive Frank Baumann, clearly setting out his expectations of all those involved in the match against FC Ingolstadt on Saturday, 3rd December (15:30 CET) at the press conference. Both Bremen and FCI picked up draws in their last match, so the same result on Saturday really would not be of any help to either team. SVW head coach Alexander Nouri in turn also sees the team’s main objective as the only option. “We just have to make sure we get the win in this game. The team is still feeling positive and have been concentrating hard during their work this week.”

We sum up why the dead ball is a useful tool for both teams, which Ingolstadt man’s impressive form was put to an end last week and who has recently joined the coaching staff for the Bavarian side.

Did you know, that…

… Die Schanzer have been pretty nervous in front of goal on many occasions? FC Ingolstadt have created 19 goalscoring opportunities this season which puts them at mid-table based on that statistic. But FCI find themselves low down in the league again, converting just 26.3% of those opportunities. In comparison, RB Leipzig lead on that front with 61.2%, while Werder sit in tenth with a chance conversion percentage of 44.4%.

… The two teams met just three months ago? Clemens Fritz and his teammates played against FCI at the end of the summer in a friendly, winning 1-0. The match-winner came from Fin Bartels shortly before half time. There was less to cheer about against Ingolstadt in the league however, with the Green-Whites losing 2-0 in Ingolstadt and 1-0 at home.

… This is a clash between the two dead ball experts? It is going to be a dangerous game for both team’s defenders. Both SV Werder and FCI have already scored 19 goals from set plays in the calendar year 2016. With such strong records, both teams lead the table for goals from set pieces in the Bundesliga.

... Moritz Hartmann ended a penalty streak last week? Moritz Hartmann is partly responsible for Ingolstadt’s strength at set-pieces, converting eight penalties in a row for the Bavarian club... until the last matchday. In their last game against VfL Wolfsburg, Hartmann missed his first spot kick in the top-flight. He scored all eight of this penalty kicks in the 2015/16 season, including one against Werder at the Weser-Stadion, as he came on as a substitute to win the game for Ingolstadt in the 93rd minute from the spot (1-0).

...Werder coach Alexander Nouri has an insider in his ranks? “I’ll share a small secret with you,” said the head coach in today’s press conference. “I’ve already spoken with Robert.” He of course meant Robert Bauer, who transferred from Ingolstadt to SVW this summer. “Robert was able to give me one or two good suggestions,” commented Nouri, who added it’s important to use the experience of his own players in the preparation for the upcoming opponent.

... this encounter is only Ingolstadt’s new coach’s third game? Without any previous Bundesliga experience, Maik Walpurgis took over from former coach Markus Kauczinski three weeks ago. His predecessor had only won two points from the first ten games and was let go, making room for Walpurgis who won against Darmstadt in his first match and drew his next against Wolfsburg. The four points earned from these two games are double what his predecessor had managed in ten.

... Tobias Stieler will referee the clash? The 35 year old from Hamburg will referee his fifth Bundesliga game involving Werder. The Green-Whites have only came out on top once when Stieler has been the ref, this was a 2-1 away win against Augsburg last season. He has been a DFB referee since 2004 and has officiated Bundesliga games since 2012. His assistants on Saturday will be Sascha Thielert and Dr. Matthias Jöllenbeck, while the fourth official is Markus Schüller.
