There is plenty of reason to be optimistic after the last two games against Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern but Werder could not take away any points despite committed performances against these two top sides. As a result, the pressure and expectations ahead of this clash with FC Augsburg on Sunday, 5th February (15:30 CET), are high. “Of course it is great when good performances in front of the fans are rewarded with applause,” acknowledged Clemens Fritz on Thursday. However in the end it is only the result that counts and it has simply been ‘unsatisfactory’ to have two defeats in a row. Alexander Nouri aptly summed up the current situation. “There are no points for applause,” said the 37-year-old. “We can get something from this game if we play with the same intensity from the last two matches,” he added.

The following sums up what the last match in Augsburg promises for this time round, how FCA have been doing at home recently and how chief executive Stefan Reuter has been able to strengthen the squad during the winter.

Did you know, that...

... FCA and SVW have never drawn 0-0? Since Augsburg were promoted to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2011, both sides have faces each other 11 times in the top flight. There have always been goals, 3.09 per game on average. The away team has won the last three matches 2-1.

... Augsburg won the last time the sides met on a Sunday? The last match at the WWK ARENA on matchday 12 of the previous season also took place on a Sunday. Claudio Pizarro came on at half-time and scored his first goal on his third return to SVW to give Werder the lead. Fin Bartels made it 2-0 shortly afterwards and Paul Verhaegh scored Augsburg’s only goal from the spot.

... the Green-Whites are two goals short of breaking a significant goal barrier? FC Bayern are currently the only team in Germany’s top flight who have scored more than 3,000 goals in the Bundesliga since its foundation in 1963. Max Kruse scored SVW’s 2998th goal in the match against Bayern Munich. Two more are required to reach this milestone and we know that the away team has won 2-1 in the last three games. That would do it...

... Augsburg’s home record has been fairly flat recently? In the eyes of Manuel Baum’s team, they are a side to fear. However they have only taken all three points at home in two out of nine Bundesliga games and they have won just six of their last 31 at home in all competitions. It is not the best record and they are missing several attacking players. It has been 13 Bundesliga home games since the Fuggerstädter have scored more than one goal on home soil.

... Werder have been noticeably more stable away from home? Alexander Nouri’s team have not lost away in three matches. First there was the draw in the Nordderby, then the win in Berlin and the last-minute draw against TSG Hoffenheim just before Christmas. It is nearly two years since Werder had a run of form like that.

... FCA strengthened their squad right at the end of the transfer window? Hours before the transfer window shut, Augsburg’s chief executive brought an old friend back to the city. Moritz Leithner was at FCA on loan as a 19 year old and played his part in helping the club achieve promotion to the Bundesliga. After spending time at VfB Stuttgart and Lazio, the once young talent has returned to the Fuggerstädter.
