Hertha preview

preliminary report
Thursday, 27.04.2017 / 13:33

Werder will go into Saturday’s game against Hertha Berlin with a mixture of positive tension and belief in their strengths as they look to continue their impressive run of form.  The pressure of the relegation scrap has now been lifted from the shoulders of the Green-Whites, however, there is now anticipation of what might lie in store for them. “The fact that the players now want to achieve more is positive. We now need to underline this point with our actions on the pitch. Anything we do now is a bonus having already reached our target,” said head coach Alexander Nouri at Thursday’s press conference. Central defender Lamine Sané said a similar thing, „We’re taking it one game at a time, aren’t putting too much pressure on ourselves and want to win as many games as possible.” The fact that Berlin are missing a number of first team players for Saturday’s encounter is not a factor. “We can’t let that influence us. We’ll need to be a tour best again in this game. We want to win this game,” said Nouri.

In which ranking list Max Kruse could switch places with Otto Rehhagel, where Aron Jóhannsson and John Anthony Brooks know each other from and past meetings between the two coaches Alexander Nouri and Pal Dardai is discussed below.

Did you know that...

… Werder are getting closer to becoming the team of the second half of the season?
Only Bayern Munich (28) have won more points that Werder (26, level with Dortmund) in the second half of the season. Werder sit second in the 2017 table, having scored one more goal than Dortmund. Only in the title winning of 2003/04 have Werder amassed more points in the first 13 games of the second half of the season. The Green-Whites have sharpened up defensively this calendar year as well having only conceded 15 goals in 13 games.

… Alexander Nouri and Pal Dardai have met before on the pitch? In December 2006, Nouri in the kit of VfL Osnabrück and Dardai of Hertha BSC met in the last 16 of the DFB Pokal. The ‘Old Lady’ and Dardai came out victorious 3-0.

… Hertha don’t have a great record in Bremen? Werder have won 34 of the 67 previous Bundesliga meetings between the sides. Only against Bayern Munich have Hertha suffered more defeats (38). Werder have won seven of the last eight games against Hertha at the Weser-Stadion. Last season’s game in Bremen ended 3-3.

… Max Kruse could surpass the record of a Werder legend?
It’s well-known that Max Kruse has been in top goalscoring form of late. The attacker has had a hand in 15 goals so far in the second half of this season and with 13 Bundesliga goals this season he’s already had his most prolific season in front of goal. Kruse could also go level with Otto Rehhagel by scoring a twelfth consecutive penalty, should Werder get one on Saturday. Only Hans-Joachim Abel (16) and Ludwig Nolden (15) have even more impressive records from the spot.

… Werder could re-write the history books? SVW were 16 points adrift of seventh place after matchday 20. If they hold onto it until the end of season, they will rewrite the history books as the largest deficit that a team has overturned to finish seventh in the three-points-per-win era is 13 points.

… Aron Jóhannsson and John Anthony Brooks made their debuts together? And it was for their country. On 14th August 2013, Werder’s striker and Hertha’s defender both made their debuts for the USA against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Jóhannsson came on off the bench and Brooks played the game from the start. However, the Hertha man won’t be playing this weekend at the Weser-Stadion because he has a hip injury.
