“We need to have impetus against Werder,” that will be Bayer Leverkusen’s aim according to their new coach Tayfun Korkut. Korkut’s opposite number, Alexander Nouri, is well aware of the potential threat that may come as a result of the change in coach. “The players will definitely have a fresh impetus because of the change of coach,” warned Nouri ahead of the clash with the Rhinelanders and added, “As a result, there are a few more unknowns in our preparation for the game against Bayer.” However, there is no reason for the Green and Whites to dread facing the team formerly managed by Roger Schmidt. Werder’s record against teams with new managers isn’t too bad. In fact, Werder’s record against teams with new managers is better than any other team in the Bundesliga. Hopefully, that won’t change when Werder meet Bayer on Friday (10/03/17) at 20:30 CET.

The positives that Werder can take from their recent good run, the dangers that Leverkusen possess and the record between the sides is summarised below.

Did you know that...

… Werder are looking to heap more pain on their favourite opponent from the last few years? It’s just over a year since Werder recorded two wins in the space of 23 days in the BayArena. The Green and Whites won away at Leverkusen in both the Bundesliga and the DFB Cup last season and should they record a third consecutive win at the BayArena tomorrow evening, it would be the first time that Werder have won three successive wins away at Leverkusen. In addition to the 2-1 win for Werder against Bayer earlier on this season, Bremen are on the hunt for a fourth successive win over the Rhineland side.

… Werder currently sit second in the recent form table? The Green and White have taken nine points from their last three matches and have a goal ratio of 6-1 from those games. Borussia Dortmund (9 points, 12-2 goals) are the only side in the Bundesliga with a healthier return from their last three matches. In addition, only four teams have conceded fewer goals than Werder so far in the second half of the season in the Bundesliga.

… a poor recent run led to the dismissal of Roger Schmidt? In the summer of 2014, Roger Schmidt masterminded a run of five consecutive wins as stand-in head coach of Bayer Leverkusen. Two and a half years later the 49-year-old was forced to clear his desk at the BayArena after losing three games on the spin in all competitions. The Rhineland side have been on a poor run for some time, however, and have suffered 11 defeats in 23 matches. They haven’t endured such a bad run for 14 years. Also, the strong home form of the last few years has deserted Bayer of late as they’ve won just two of their last seven home games.

… despite their recent dip in form, Bayer’s stats this season aren’t all bad? There are some numbers from this season that the Rhinelanders will be pleased with. Bayer have conceded 17 goals from set pieces this season and that is by some distance the most in the league. Bernd Leno has had to pick nine headers out of his own net and Leverkusen have fallen behind nine times as a result of individual mistakes this season. Both of these records are also the worst in the league.

… Werder aren’t a particularly fruitful opponent for one Leverkusen player? Kevin Volland has played nine times against Werder Bremen and is yet to record a single victory. The 24-year-old, who was on the scoresheet last week against Borussia Dortmund, has only taken four points from a possible 27 against Bremen.

… Tobias Stieler will referee the game? The 35-year-old will referee Werder for the third time this season. In the two previous Werder games which he refereed the Green and Whites lost 4-1 at Gladbach and beat Ingolstadt 2-1. He’s also refereed Leverkusen on two occasions already this season, when they beat Wolfsburg 2-1 and Berlin 3-1.
