It’s almost time! The Bundesliga will soon kick off another year of action and a huge challenge awaits SV Werder in the first competitive match of 2017. For Champions League side Borussia Dortmund, sixth-place isn’t a satisfactory position in the league, however, they are nevertheless the clear favourites for this Saturday’s clash (15:30 CET). “Both team’s role before the game are clear, but we can sense a chance,” noted Fin Bartels, who scored against BVB the last time he played them. “If we do what we’re good at and prepare ourselves well for Dortmund’s strengths, why shouldn’t we pick up points?” he added. Head coach Alexander Nouri reflected on his team’s most recent games before the winter break, as the Green-Whites picked up some important points. “Against Hertha and Hoffenheim we were also the underdogs. We want to perform just as well as we did then,” he said.

Which Werder player could have a different reason to celebrate against Dortmund, how SVW have started the New Year in recent times and which of our opponent’s key players won’t be available on Saturday is revealed below…

Did you know…

… the head-to-head record between SVW and BVB couldn’t be more equal? Each team has 40 wins, while the points have been shared on 16 occasions. Additionally, Borussia Dortmund have only suffered more defeats against FC Bayern than against Werder in the German top flight. However, the last game the two sides contested ended in the Black and Yellow’s favour, as they won narrowly 3-2 at SIGNAL IDUNA Park last April.

... Werder currently have the most consistent attack in the league? This streak was almost broken in their last outing, but Serge Gnabry made sure it continued with a goal in the 87th minute. This strike meant Bremen have now scored in 15 Bundesliga games in a row – the longest current run in the top flight. The last time the Green-Whites held a run like this was between January and August of 2010, when they netted in 18 consecutive matches.

… Jaroslav Drobny could make his 200th Bundesliga appearance? Even though Jaroslav Drobny has only played in goal nine times for Werder, the 37-year old could make his 200th Bundesliga appearance against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Before Werder, the Czech played for VfL Bochum, Hertha BSC and Hamburger SV.

… Werder always do well at the beginning of the calendar year? Werder haven’t lost the first Bundesliga fixture of the calendar year for three years - in 2014, they drew 1-1 against Eintracht Braunschweig, in 2015 won 2-0 against Hertha BSC and in 2016 celebrated a 3-1 win over Schalke.

… Dortmund don’t have a very good away form so far this season? Despite boasting an unbeaten home record this campaign, they still haven’t found their form away from home, having only won twice on the road this season.

… Dortmund’s top scorer is unavailable to play on Saturday? Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang has already scored 16 goals this season, however he definitely won’t be adding to his goal tally this weekend at the Weser-Stadion. He is back in his homeland Gabon, where the Africa Cup of Nations 2017 is being held. He has already scored a goal in each of the two games he has played at the tournament so far.

… Dortmund don’t have many alternatives to play upfront? Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is only unavailable for the short-term, however he has been playing regularly for Dortmund upfront over the past few years. Adrian Ramos’ transfer is CF Granada looks likely, but Dortmund have not yet brought in anyone to strengthen their attack.
