SV Werder’s form in the past weeks has been on the way up thanks to home wins against Wolfsburg and Leverkusen and picking up a point in Darmstadt. By using this momentum from the last few games, Alexander Nouri’s men have the chance to continue this run of form against RB Leipzig (Sunday, 15:30 CEST). “We’ve shown in the past few weeks that we can pick up points against any opponent if we’re ready and willing and have the right team spirit,” noted Nouri in the press conference ahead of the fixture in Saxony. The Green-Whites’ last away win in a competitive game came on the 2nd of March in 2016 against last week’s opponents, Leverkusen (4-1). Since then, Werder have only earned points through draws in Köln and Darmstadt… its’s high time then, that the lads bring three points back to the Weser again!

Find out below why SVW can travel to Leipzig with confidence despite their recent away form and in what respect the clash with RB is one of the top fixtures of the eighth Bundesliga matchday...

Did you know…

… Sunday is a good day for Werder to play away from home? Despite the recent negative away record, one statistic about the Green-Whites playing away from home can give the fans confidence. This promising fact is that Werder have picked up points in each of their last five away games on a Sunday, winning three times and drawing twice!

… Werder have already played two friendly matches against “die Roten Bullen”? It will however, be Bremen’s first competitive game against the club which was founded in 2009. In these friendly encounter, each team has one win a piece, with the Green-Whites winning 3-0 last October in Wildeshausen thanks to goals from Bartels, Lorenzen and Manneh. Leipzig’s victory came in 2013 as they triumphed 2-1 in their own stadium, formerly called the Leipziger Zentralstadion.

… the Green-Whites have already played against another Leipzig side? In the 1993/94 season, Werder faced VfB Leipzig, who were the first ever German champions in 1903, at the Weser-Stadion and triumphed 3-1. In Leipzig, the sides couldn’t be separated (1-1). Since then, VfB dissolved and RB were later formed.

… Sunday’s game is a kind of heavy-weight clash? On Sunday, two of the Bundesliga’s most in-form teams will face each other. Both Leipzig and Werder have collected seven points from their last three games, only TSG are in better form, winning all of their last three matches.

… our attack is flourishing particularly under Alexander Nouri? Nouri has been on the Green-White touchline for four games now and in total, Bremen have found the back of the net seven times – exactly the same amount as current champions Bayern Munich. Only Borussia Dortmund have scored more during this time period (9). These goals have also translated into points for Nouri’s men and he currently has the second best points per game record in SVW history (1.75 points per game), only Otto Rehhagel has more (1.79).

… both teams have goal scorers from all over the park? This season, RB (12) and Werder (9) have scored a combined 21 goals this season. These 21 strikes have been scored by 16 different players (eight for each team), which is the second highest in the league. On the last matchday, Zlatko Junuzovic and Ousman Manneh got their names on the scoresheet for the first time this season, while Emil Forsberg also got his first goal of the season, which was incidentally also his first for Leipzig.

… Robert Hartmann will officiate the encounter? The 37 year old from Wangen (Bavaria) has been a DFB referee since 2005 and a referee in the top-flight since 2011. His last Werder game was on the 23rd matchday of last season, this game ended in a 2-2 draw with Darmstadt 98. In total, he’s officiated eleven Green-White games, from these ties, Werder have only lost twice. On Sunday, his assistants will be Christian Leicher and Markus Schüller, while the fourth official will be Florian Heft.
