On Wednesday (21/12, 20:00 CET), the Green-Whites will come up against the only unbeaten team in this current Bundesliga season – TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Under the guidance of Julian Nagelsmann, TSG have become one of the most impressive sides of the season so far. “Hoffenheim have developed amazingly when you consider where they were last year. We know what to expect,” said Werder coach Alexander Nouri. Frank Baumann also noted he wouldn’t be surprised to see TSG in the Champions League next year: “They’re the clear favourites, a lot will be demanded us of.” Nevertheless, a lot of facts hint in favour of the Green-Whites for tomorrow's game.

Which statistics can give Werder optimism for this clash, how the last Wednesday evening game between the two side ended and which SVW players will particularly be looking forward to the tie are revealed below...

Did you know...

... this fixture usually provides goals? The first Bundesliga meeting between the two sides ended 5-4 to Werder and the subsequent games also haven’t been boring. In the last twelve matches, both teams have found the back of the net at least once in every game, with an average of 3.5 goal per match!

... there isn’t another team that SVW prefer to play against? There also isn’t another Bundesliga team that Werder have a better points-per-game record against than TSG (2.06). In the last 17 competitive matches against Hoffenheim, the Green-Whites lost just once and have won all of the last four in Sinsheim.

... that despite taking a 1-0 lead against Werder many times, Hoffenheim have never turned this advantage into a win? In the relatively short history of this tie, TSG have netted the first goal six times. However, a 1-0 lead for tomorrow’s hosts has never turned into a win against Werder. Four of these six games have ended in draws, while Bremen turned it around twice to take all three points.

... since TSG were promoted to the top flight, the both teams have been the masters of draws? TSG won promotion in 2008 and have drawn more often than any other Bundesliga teams (85). With nine draws in the first 15 games of the season, they're keeping up their reputation of being the “draw kings”. The team to have drawn the second most amount of games is SV Werder, with just six less than tomorrow’s opposition.

... a former Bremen player often grabs the headlines for Hoffenheim? Sandro Wagner, who played for SVW between 2010 and 2012 and scored five goals, is currently one of the best German strikers around. Despite not yet receiving a call-up to the national side, he has scored 18 goals in 2016 and is therefore the top German goalscorer of the calendar year. This season, he has found the back of the net eight times and his record against the Green-Whites is also quite good, with three goals in eight games.

... two current Werder players enjoy playing against Hoffenheim? Phillip Bargfrede isn’t known for his goal-scoring ability, striking just four times in 142 Bundesliga games. However, three of his four goals have come against TSG! Attacker Max Kruse is of course more adept at finding the back of the net, and Hoffenheim are also his favourite victims, scoring seven times against them in ten games.

... this fixture also took place in midweek two seasons ago? That time, Werder found themselves in twelfth place on the 19th matchday. Viktor Skripnik’s men won 2-1 in the WIRSOL Rhein-Necktar-Arena thanks to goals from Franco di Santo and, of course, Phillip Bargfrede. This win marked the start of a five-game winning run which, by the end of it, fired SVW into the top-half of the table.

... Benjamin Cortus will referee the game? The 35 year old will be taking charge of his first Bundesliga match of the season, it will also be the first time he’s officiated a Werder game. Cortus has been a DFB referee since 2009 and has refereed second division games since 2011. His assistants will be Daniel Schlager and Florian Badstübner, while the fourth official will be Marco Achmüller.
