One thing becomes particularly apparent when you look at the situation in the Bundesliga table; never before has the Nordderby been embedded relegation battle as much as this one. Despite the precarious situation in which both sides find themselves ahead of the 105th Nordderby on Saturday, 26th November (15:30 CET), or perhaps even because of exactly that, Werder coach Alexander Nouri is expecting a fiery encounter in Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion. “Obviously there have been derbies before when both sides have been higher up the table but none of the edge has been taken off it,” emphasised Nouri at the press conference ahead of the game. Only one thing counts for striker Max Kruse, who sat alongside his coach at the press conference. “I’m not interested in the rest of the season - I want to win this match.” And Kruse certainly had some good facts from the past to share.

Below we have summarised the key facts on of the Nordderby, how Hamburger’s new coach resents failing to beat the Green-Whites in previous years and which Bremen man played his last Nordderby with the other side's shirt.

Did you know, that...

... the points have not been shared between the two sides in six years? It’s all or nothing – there has not been a single draw between the two teams in the last six years. The last time they could not be separated was in a 1-1 draw in May 2010 in Bremen at the Weser-Stadion. Werder have since won seven of the subsequent twelve derbies. The last time this fixture ended in a draw in Hamburg was more than ten years ago, when it finished 1-1 in September 2006.

... Max Kruse particularly enjoys playing against the “Rothosen”? “I have never lost in Hamburg,” said Kruse, showing how well-informed he is at the press conference on Thursday. “He also could have easily replaced the word “in” with “against” since he has never left the pitch on the losing side against HSV in ten Bundesliga matches against them, whoever he has been playing for. Kruse played in two derbies for St. Pauli against their city rivals, winning the away match at the Volksparkstadion 1-0 and he did not taste defeat in a further eight matches against HSV with Freiburg, Gladbach and Wolfsburg. One peculiar fact is that Kruse has lost against every other Bundesliga team maximum by his third fixture against them, so his record against HSV is impressive and one he is desperate to continue!

... Serge Gnabry boasts a perfect record away from Werder? The clash with HSV on Sunday will be Serge Gnabry’s first Nordderby in his young Bundesliga career. But the German international could already equal a Bundesliga record in his fifth ever away match in the German top flight. Gnabry has scored in all four of his matches away from the Weser-Stadion and was not yet in the Bremen squad for the opening game of the season against Bayern. Should Gnabry hit the back of the net again against Hamburg, it would equal Steffen Baumgart’s record, which was set in the 1995/96 season for FC Hansa Rostock, of a player scoring in each of his first five Bundesliga away games.

… the new HSV head coach is no Werder specialist? Markus Gisdol took over as head coach of Hamburger SV six games ago in place of Bruno Labbadia. However, he has failed to win with his new team since taking charge, picking up just two draws so far. In Werder Bremen, Gisdol will be coming up against his own personal bogey team on Saturday. Gisdol couldn’t manage a single win in the six games that he managed against Bremen as head coach of Hoffenheim. He has not come up against a team more often without recording a win.

… a current Bremen player’s last Nordderby was for Hamburg? Current Werder keeper, Jaroslav Drobny, spent six years in a Hamburg jersey. In the summer of 2016 he switched allegiances and moved to the Green-Whites. In the last Nordderby between the two sides in April, Hamburg won 2-1 with Drobny saving a penalty from his now current team mate, Claudio Pizarro. All in all, The Czech has played in four Nordderby’s with both teams, winning twice.

… the Volksparkstadtion has been anything but a HSV-fortress recently? “Home advantage” is a phrase that the supporters of HSV have rarely been able to use. Markus Gisdol’s side have lost their last four games at home. Should they lost at home to Werder at the weekend, they will set a new unwanted record.

… Only one person can better Pizarro’s record against Hamburg? And who else but Bayern legend Gerd Müller. The Bomber scored 27 Bundesliga goals against Hamburg in his career. Claudio Pizarro’s record against HSV is also well worth a look. In 26 appearances against Saturday’s opposition, the Peruvian has found the net 19 times, scoring more goals against Hamburg than any other Bundesliga opposition.

… the game will be officiated by Dr. Felix Brych? An experienced referee who’s overseen games on the world’s biggest stages – the World Cup, European Championship and the Olympic Games. The 41 year old has been a DFB ref since 1999, and a Bundesliga ref since 2004. He’s officiated 21 matches involving the Green-Whites, but this will be his first Nordderby. Brych’s assistants on Saturday will be Mark Borsch and Stefan Lupp, while the fourth official will be Bastian Dankert.
