Borussia Mönchengladbach against Werder Bremen – this encounter provided entertainment last season and on Saturday evening (18:30 CEST) the two sides meet again. After an unsatisfactory start to the season, Werder need points to recover. An intense three-game week awaits the Green-Whites, starting on Saturday against the Fohlenelf and concluding with two home games against Mainz and Wolfsburg. “We see this run of games as an opportunity – in just a week we can make up ground so we have the chance to reach a higher position in the table,” said sporting director Frank Baumann ahead of the Gladbach tie. However, Borussia will also want to show a reaction after consecutive defeats to Freiburg (3-1) and Manchester City (4-0).

How the encounters with Borussia went last season, which Gladbach player Werder should be particularly careful of and which ex-Bremen player will want to change his record against the Green-Whites is revealed below.

Did you know...

... Gladbach against Werder is a truly traditional fixture. The teams have faced each other exactly 100 times. The record: 40 wins for Werder, 38 for Gladbach.

... Skripnik doesn’t feel Gladbach’s busier week is an advantage for Werder. “I don’t believe it’s an advantage for us that Borussia played on Wednesday in the Champions League. They know how to deal with it, are in form and have a big squad. Also, after two defeats in a row they’ll want to win even more,” Skripnik pointed out.

... ex-Bremen player Yannik Vestergaard hasn’t yet won against Werder. Before his transfer to the Weser, the 1.99 meter centre-back played Werder four times but never managed to win. His record is three draws and a defeat.

... Werder’s defence should keep their eyes on Gladbach’s Lars Stindl. Stindl has scored at least one goal in every one of his last five games against SVW – his goals have also always been his team’s first. Even at the start of his career, when Stindl was still at Karlsruher SC, Werder were his favourite opposition. In May 2009, he scored his first brace against at the Weserstadion in a 3-1 win for KSC and in total, Stindl has scored seven goals against the Green-Whites in 17 competitive games.

... Werder and Gladbach played out three spectacular games last season. In the first encounter of three last season, Werder triumphed 2-1 with goals from Jóhannsson and Vestergaard. In the round of sixteen of the DFB Cup in December 2015, Bremen came out on top with a 4-3 win. Gladbach then got revenge for these two defeats with a 5-1 home win in the second half of last year’s campaign.

... two players will feel very at home in this encounter. The Fohlenelf’s Andre Hahn grew up in Cuxhaven and as a youngster played for FC Oberneuland, TuS Koblenz and Kickers Offenbach amongst others before he moved to Augsburg and now Gladbach. Werder’s goalkeeper coach Christian Vander was born in Willich, close to Mönchengladbach and played for Borussia’s youth side.

... Werder have had it particularly hard on the road recently. On the one hand, the Green-Whites have only been able to get one point from their last five Bundesliga away games. This point came in a 0-0 draw with Köln. On the other hand, this five game run wasn’t easy as Werder had to play in Munich twice and lost marginally to Dortmund once.

... Tobias Stieler will officiate the game. The 35 year old solicitor from Hamburg has refereed 59 Bundesliga games – four of these 59 were Werder matches. He also officiated our DFB Cup semi-final loss against Bayern (2-0). At Borussia-Park this week, the linesmen will be Dr. Matthias Jöllenbeck and Alexander Sather while the fourth official will be Christian Fischer.
