Just two days after the 5-2 thrashing of Freiburg, Werder are back in Bundesliga action on Tuesday evening (04/04) as they welcome Schalke to the Weser-Stadion. Despite the superb run of form over the last few weeks, head coach Alexander Nouri isn’t getting carried away as he prepares his team to face Schalke. “We’ve always done well when we’ve concentrated on ourselves. Of course, the self-confidence in our own abilities is growing, however, we want to stay grounded. We realise that everyone needs to contribute to the team and we still have a lof of work to do.” Nouri and his team will need to be fully focused if they are to record a third straight home win under the floodlights on Tuesday night.

An Özil record which Thomas Delaney equalled, the opinion of Frank Bauer ahead of the Schalke game and the thoughts of Alexander Nouri are all summarised below.

Did you know that...

... it’s not just Werder, but also Schalke, who are on a good run of form? Werder have gained 16 points from their last six Bundesliga games, but Schalke are unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions. The Royal Blues have take seven points from their last three Bundesliga games, however, they haven’t been that successful away from home. They’ve only won two of their last twelve away matches and Werder have won their last two at home.

... Werder are still scoring goals from set-pieces? Werder have scored seven goals from set-pieces in their last six matches. If we look at the last eight Werder games, nine of the Green-White’ 17 goals have come from dead-ball situations. No team has scored more from set-pieces since the beginning of February.

... Werder don’t like playing on Tuesdays? Out of the last six games played on a Tuesday, Werder have only gained a single point. The last win on a Tuesday was in April 2008 when they beat FC Hansa Rostock 2-1. High time to end this run…

... it was seven years since a Werder player was directly involved in four goals in one game? Before Thomas Delaney scored three and assisted one against Freiburg, Mesut Özil was the last Werder man to achieve such a feat in a game when he scored one and assisted three, also in Freiburg, in November 2009. Delaney could potentially better this achievement against Schalke, “With four goals”, joked Frank Bauman. We’ll have to wait and see…

... Max Kruse moved one step closer to reaching 50 goals last Saturday? Kruse scored his first Bundesliga goal for St. Pauli in 2011 against Hoffenheim. Since then, he’s notched 48 more goals in the league, the last of which coming in the recent match against Freiburg. The attacker could score his 50th Bundesliga goal against Schalke in what would be his 182nd appearance in the competition.

... Werder are becoming increasingly potent in attack? After nine matches in the second half of the season, Werder have scored 18 goals. Serge Gnabry (10) and Max Kruse (7) lead the goalscoring charts for the Green-Whites, but sadly only one fo them will be available for the Schalke game. Werder haven’t had a problem scoring goals this season and have only drawn a blank on two occasions. Only Bayern Munich can better this record.

… Alexander Nouri is expecting a tough game? “Schalke have a lot of good individuals and have found the right balance between defence and attack. We will definitely have to be at our best in order to get a positive result,” said Nouri at Monday’s press conference.”

… the game will be refereed by Robert Hartmann? The 37-year-old has been officiating in the Bundesliga since 2011. He’s refereed Werder once already this season away at Leipzig. His linesmen will be Christian Leicher and Markus Schüller. The fourth official is Florian Heft.
