Being confident but also remaining modest – That is the approach Werder coach Alexander Nouri has set his team for the upcoming match in Freiburg. The Green-Whites take on SC Freiburg on Saturday, 1st April at 15:30 CEST on the back of five matches without defeat. Forward Fin Bartels is delighted that the Bundesliga is getting back underway after the international break. “Of course we would have liked to have played again the following week after the victory over Leipzig. But for all those who have not been involved in playing for their countries, the break was a good opportunity to recharge the batteries again. Now we’re excited for the match in Freiburg.” But Bartels knows it will be far from easy against the clinical Breisgauer side. “Freiburg work extremely hard and if you give them even just one metre, you’ll be punished immediately.”

Find out here why the Green-Whites will likely have to run a few more kilometres than usual, Felix Wiedwald’s superb record in his last five matches and why the whole team will be making it a difficult afternoon for the hosts.

 Did you know, that...

... two set-piece specialists meet in the ring? While Werder have been excellent from attacking set-pieces recently, Freiburg have been very solid at defending free-kicks and corners. The Green-Whites have scored six goals from set-pieces in their last five Bundesliga games. Streich’s men in contrast have only scored one from a dead-ball situation since the second half of the season got underway.

... Freiburg have run more on average than any other side? The Breisgauer have run an average of 111.9 kilometres per game. No other team can match that. Werder are only marginally behind with an average of 113.4 kilometres per game.

... Freiburg do not need many chances to score? SCG have finished seven of their eight clear-cut chances since the winter break. Christian Streich’s team actually have the best chance conversion rate so far this season with 66.7%. Werder will have to be particularly weary of Florian Niederlechner and Maximilian Philipp, who have been SCF’s joint top goalscorers with eight each.

... former Werder man Nils Petersen is the joint best substitute in Bundesliga history? With sixteen goals each after being brought on as a substitute, both forwards are well-known for making sure that opposition defenders are on their toes all the time. In addition, Pizarro has scored nine times in nine appearances for Werder against Freiburg in the Bundesliga. He only has a better record against Hertha BSC.

... both keepers have made the most saves since matchday 21? Felix Wiedwald has made 20 saves and held 90.9% of shots, putting ahead of all other Bundesliga keepers in that period. SC keeper Alexander Schwolow has made just one less save than Werder’s safe hands. However he has only held 70.4% of shots, putting him in second place.

... Freiburg were Werder’s favourite opponents for many years? Although Freiburg have not lost against Werder since March 2015 and beat SVW 3-1 in this season’s reverse fixture, Werder have by far the better record overall against Freiburg. Bremen have won 20 of their last 33 clashes with SCF, losing just eight and drawing five.

... Max Kruse was given his Germany debut whilst a Freiburg player? The midfielder had an outstanding season with SC Freiburg in 2012/2013. Kruse played a crucial role in Freiburg’s qualification for the Europa League with, netting eleven times during the campaign and making eight assists. The summer saw Kruse given his first cap for the Germany national team.
