Darmstadt 98 were one of the surprise teams in last season’s Bundesliga. The promoted side confirmed their top-flight status for another year with a win in Berlin on the penultimate matchday of last season and proved themselves to be a tricky opponent for Werder; the Green-Whites lost their away game last year against the Lilies 2-1. “Darmstadt are very aggressive and are very willing to run. We’ll have to do everything to counter that,” noted captain Clemens Fritz. After the thrilling last-minute victory against Wolfsburg, Werder will do everything to get their second win of the season on Saturday (15:30 CEST). “We played as a team but we have to do this week in week out.”

Read below about how the Green-White’s current position in the table may actually be an advantage for them in this encounter, Darmstadt coach Norbert Meier’s winless record against Werder and why Fritz, Moisander and Co. have to stay concentrated right until the final whistle.

Did you know...

... Werder could win their 750th Bundesliga game against Darmstadt this weekend. After last Saturday’s last-minute 2-1 win against VfL Wolfsburg, Werder clinched their 749th win from 1769 games - only FC Bayern have reached this milestone.

... Werder traditionally like to score against SVD. In the nine games between the two sides since the start of the Bundesliga in 1963, Werder have scored 24 times, which means an average of 2.7 goals for per game. Werder have only failed to score once against Darmstadt, this was in a 3-0 defeat in May of 1979, this victory for the Lilies is still their biggest Bundesliga win ever.

... Darmstadt coach Norbert Meier hasn’t managed to win against Werder in the Bundesliga in his managerial career. The ex-Werder player, who played 242 games at the Weser from 1981 to 1989, scoring 66 goals, has faced the Green-Whites four times as a coach but hasn’t ever won. He’s managed two draws and two defeats in games with Gladbach (1998), Duisburg (2005) and Düsseldorf (2012/13). However, in March of last year, Meier knocked Werder out of the DFB cup with Arminia Bielefeld.

... Werder will have to be awake right until the last minute against Darmstadt. The Lilies’ only two goals of the season not only both came at home, but also right before full-time. On the second matchday, substitute Sandro Sirigu scored in the 90th minute to win the Hessen derby against Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 and two matchday’s later, Darmstadt grabbed an equaliser against Hoffenheim in the second minute of stoppage time (1-1). However, Werder also showed last Saturday that they too are a fan of late goals.

... Darmstadt have one point less on the board than in their relegation 1981/82 season . The Lilies haven’t been able to repeat their solid start to last season, having earned just four points from five matchdays. 35 years ago, when Darmstadt were relegated from the Bundesliga, they actually had one more point from the same amount of games.

... it’s an advantage for SVW to be behind the Lilies in the table. Darmstadt have never won a home game in the Bundesliga when they’ve played a team below them in the table. On the six occasions that this has happened, Darmstadt have only taken a single point.
