Considering the most recent results against FC Bayern München, SV Werder Bremen can only stay positive by looking forwards. Werder host FC Bayern München at the Weser Stadion on Saturday at 15:30. According to Nouri, previous results don’t matter ahead of the weekend clash. “There’s no use looking back, we have to focus on the present,” said Nouri ahead of facing the current league leaders. The experienced Claudio Pizarro thinks that a win against Bayern is realistic. “We’re the home side at the weekend and I think we can use that to our advantage and perform even better than we did against Dortmund,” said Pizarro. “We showed a lot of character despite going a man down and we played some good football. Bayern are the clear favourites, but we could cause an upset.”

How different could the starting line-up look compared to the 6-0 defeat on the first day of the season? What are Bayern’s weaknesses? Why could it be time to Pizarro to score? Find out the answers to these questions and more below.

Did you know that…?

… the Werder starting eleven could look completely different to the team that played Bayern on the first day of the season? Many players who could feature in Saturday’s starting eleven weren’t available to play at the Allianz Arena on the first day of the season. Santiago García, Niklas Moisander, Max Kruse, Claudio Pizarro, Thomas Delaney and Serge Gnabry all didn’t play against FC Bayern München at the end of August. The Werder starting line-up will certainly look completely different on Saturday and maybe these players can cause problems for Bayern.

… another Werder player could celebrate a record at the weekend? Zlatko Junuzovic had to watch Werder play Borussia Dortmund from the stands last weekend due to injury, however he is available again to face FC Bayern München and could make his 150th Bundesliga appearance if he plays.

… Alexander Nouri came close to beating FC Bayern as a player? It will be the first time Nouri has faced Bayern as a manager, however the 37-year old came close to beating them whilst he was a player at VfL Osnabrück.  In the 2004/05 season, Nouri and VfL Osnabrück drew Bayern in the second round of the DFB cup. After an early setback, VfL Osnabrück equalised and came close to turning the game round into a cup upset, however Claudio Pizarro made sure that Bayern got the win with two goals and an assist.

… Bayern have only won five out of their last nine home games? This statistic would be a decent record for any other Bundesliga club, however three losses and a draw on the road is unusual for a team like FC Bayern München. Out of a possible 27 points, Bayern have only picked up 16 points in their last nine games on the road. They have also only kept an away clean sheet once in their last six matches (1-0 against Darmstadt).

… the two best foreign strikers in Bundesliga history will face each other? After his brace against SC Freiburg last weekend, Robert Lewandowski is the second best foreign striker in the history of the Bundesliga. The Polish player has scored 135 goals playing for Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern. Claudio Pizarro is in first place, however he does not want to let Lewandowski overtake him. “Of course I’m hoping that he doesn’t manage to overtake me,” he said. “Therefore I want to score on Saturday so I can extend my lead at the top,” said Pizarro with a smile on his face.

… Carlo Ancelotti also has memories of Werder’s number 14? Claudio Pizarro used to wear the number 24 shirt for Werder and Carlo Ancelotti certainly hasn’t forgotten the Peruvian’s performance at the San Siro against Milan. Back then Carlo Ancelotti was manager of AC Milan who drew Werder Bremen in the third round of the UEFA cup. Pirlo and Pato put AC Milan in the lead, however Pizarro scored a brace to bring Werder level which sent them through to the next round of the tournament.

… Sascha Stegemann will referee Saturday`s game? The 32-year old has been refereeing Bundesliga games since 2014. Stegemann has taken charge of 16 games in the top three divisions and the DFB cup so far this season. The last time he took charge of a Werder Bremen game was against Mönchengladbach in February 2016 when he awarded a penalty. His assistants are Christian Fischer and Sören Storks and the fourth official is Frank Willenborg.
