A mid-week match-up at the Weser-Stadion! Werder’s new interim coach Alexander Nouri has had two training session to try and prepare his team for Wednesday’s clash with Mainz (kick-off 20:00 CEST). Nouri explained at the press conference ahead of the game that they would be coming up against “a strong team.” He explained: “We have obviously prepared for our opponents but the focus is mostly on our own game,” and continued: “There isn’t a lot of time left, that’s why we can’t work on putting together a whole system right now. It’s important that the players can implement what we want in a short space of time.”

Why is Mainz’s away record a good omen for a Werder win? Why Alexander Nouri has had the better of the club from Rhineland-Palatinate? Which former Bremen men will be returning to the Weser on Wednesday? WERDER.DE has collected all the answers to these question and more.

Did you know that…

…Werder are a bogey team for Mainz: The Zerofivers have conceded 35 goals in 20 matches against Werder, meaning that only FC Bayern have scored more often against Mainz than Werder. Furthermore, Werder are unbeaten in their last four matches against the FSV. The last Werder loss was a 3-0 in Mainz on 12th April 2014.

…Alexander Nouri beat Mainz last weekend? Werder’s U23s beat Mainz’s second team 2-1 last weekend with Melvyn Lorenzen scoring the winner six minutes from time after coming on as a substitute.

…Mainz are currently under an away game curse? Mainz haven’t been able to win back to back games away from home for the last two-and-a-half years. If this run is to continue they will have to lose the next game awayfrom home following their 3-1 victory in Augsburg.

…two former Bremen men will be returning to the Weser? Levin Öztunali played for SVW from January 2015 until June 2016. He returned to Leverkusen from his loan spell at Werder and was sent straight back out again to Mainz. Rouven Schröder worked as a department head at Werder for a year-and-a-half under Thomas Eichin. He became FSV’s sporting director in March this year.

…Serge Gnabry has been a shining light in a difficult situation for Werder? The 21-year-old also put in a brilliant performance against Werder, winning 55 percent of his tackles and completing 86 percent of his passes. His personal highlight will be his first Bundesliga goal in the 4-1 loss to Borussia Mönchengladbach. However, he is still a doubt ahead of the upcoming game against Mainz.

…the teams both enjoy Wednesday fixtures? Werder have won seven of their last nine matches on Wednesdays with their last win being a 4-1 victory over Leverkusen in March this year. The Zerofivers are also strong mid-week though, winning five of their last six matches on this particular weekday.

…Viktor Skripnik also made his debut as Werder coach against Mainz – and won? Werder beat Mainz 2-1 in the Coface-Arena on Viktor Skripnik’s coaching debut for SVW with Franco Di Santo scoring a brace.

…Wolfgang Stark will referee the game? The 46-year-old from Ergolding has taken charge of 329 Bundesliga games and 120 2. Bundesliga matches in his long refereeing career. The banker, who was a FIFA referee from 1999 until 2014 is one of the most experienced officials in Germany. Stark has been involved with 31 Werder matches. His assistants will be Mike Pickel and Martin Petersen with Patrick Ittrich being the fourth official.

…you can follow Werder’s Snapchat story for the game? The Green-Whites have had an official account on the social network since the beginning of pre-season in July. You can get exclusive videos and pictures from the ground by following “werdersnaps”.
