The first game of the season at the

Weserstadion is almost upon us - Werder will play FC Augsburg on Sunday (15.30

CEST). Not only the fans are excited for the game, as Zlatko Junuzovic revealed

in Friday’s press conference: “Everyone in the team is looking forward to the

game. Training was very good, we’re all together and marching forward – this is

what we need for the match.” Coach Viktor Skripnik and Junuzovic both agreed on

how they have to approach the encounter. “Our goal is to get the supporters

behind us and we’ll achieve this by giving everything. Everyone has to show

they want the three points,” commented the coach. The Austrian midfielder then

echoed his boss by confirming: “Every player has to take responsibility, we

have to show our courage through our body language.”

Why all the facts points to a home win and how Werder have been preparing specially for the game is explained below!

Did you know...

... Bremen have never lost the first three competitive game of the season in almost half a century. After the defeats to Lotte and Bayern, Werder will do everything to avoid ruining this 49 year old record.

... Werder like playing on Sunday. The Green-Whites have won five of the last seven Sunday games that they’ve contested (2 draws).

... Augsburg traditionally don’t start the season well. Since their promotion in 2010, FCA haven't won any of their first two Bundesliga games and the Green-Whites will do everything to try to keep this record intact.

... Werder’s current home record looks promising. Bremen have only lost one of their last ten Bundesliga matches at the Weserstadion, this defeat came against Sunday’s opposition on the 29th matchday of last season. Fritz, Junuzovic and Co. will want to do better this time and turn the Weserstadion back into a fortress.

... the encounter with Augsburg promises goals. None of Werder’s games against Augsburg have ended goalless – neither in the Bundesliga (ten games), nor in the DFB cup (three games). In the ten Bundesliga games, there’s been on average three goals a game.

... Werder’s Thursday and Friday training sessions took place in the Weserstadion on Thursday and Friday. “We have a few players who’ll experience the Weserstadion for the first time on Sunday. Therefore, it’s important they get to know their surroundings and practice their moves on the match pitch,” explained head coach Viktor Skripnik.

... Daniel Siebert will be the referee on Sunday. The 32-year-old student from Berlin has officiated 43 Bundesliga games – four of these being Werder games (all of them at the Weserstadion). Two of them were matches against Augsburg (a 1-0 victory in the 2013/14 season and a 2-1 defeat in the 2015/16 season). Siebert also refereed Werder’s first home game of last season, when the Green-Whites were defeated by FC Schalke 3-0.
