SV Werder have had to wait over two years for such a streak. With their 2-0 win over Darmstadt 98, they gained three more all-important points. But it didn’t look like it would go that way at first. “We were lacking passion to begin with,” remarked Max Kruse after the game, who scored twice. After a difficult first-half in which the Green-whites struggled to keep it level, Kruse’s goals were the reason they had cause to celebrate. It was also the reason Robert Bauer could say to the press: “We scored two goals, Darmstadt scored none. In the end, it was a deserved victory.”

Two completely different halves, one rousing team-talk, and one penalty given. Those were the hot topics in the Mixed Zone after the match. WERDER.de talked to the team to find out their thoughts.

The match:

Alexander Nouri: “I’m to blame for the first half, and for the second half I’m just grateful how the game ended. We weren’t committed enough. At half-time, we were able to correct that and show a different story in the second phase. We had three to four certain chances, we proved we can persevere, and earned the points after the break.”

Claudio Pizarro: “Darmstadt played well in the first half, but they didn’t have much luck with their chances. We wanted to pressure them, but we were often outplayed and were exposed at the back as a result. We acknowledged these mistakes and changed our style of play. Consequently, the second half was a lot better.

Robert Bauer: “Darmstadt were dominant in the first half, with lots of possession. The first corner was dangerous, and ‘Wiedi’ showed his class. Of course we weren’t happy with the first 45 minutes; we never had complete control at any point. We purposefully sat deep in the last 10 minutes because we didn’t want to go into the locker-room a goal down and we succeeded in that.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “The first-half was weak from us. We played poorly as a team, but we did better in the second-half.”

The half-time team-talk:

Robert Bauer: “We heard the manager’s words clearly. He said to us that the Darmstadt players have run almost ten kilometers further than we have. That irked us a bit, because we wanted to show the fans that we can play well at home too. Perhaps this pressure that we put on ourselves was also the reason why we didn’t play so well before the break.”

Niklas Moisander: “The manager was brutally honest during half-time, and none of us were happy. Despite this, he tried to motivate us and told us he believed in us.”

Alexander Nouri: “It was definitely loud in the dressing-room. We were all disappointed and I was emotional. We decided as a team that we would all pull our weight and correct the problem.”

The penalty:

Claudio Pizarro: “It was a clear penalty. I wasn’t happy with how long the referee took to blow the whistle, it was obviously a foul.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “I couldn’t see if it was a clean challenge from where I was. For me the foul on Serge was a more certain penalty.”

The current situation:

Maximilian Eggestein: “We continue to be in the thick of the relegation battle. We’ve put ourselves in a good position thanks to the last few results, but we’re not clear yet. Because of that, we’re going to travel to Leverkusen with the intent of winning.”

Alexander Nouri: “The three points are great, but we’d do better not to let the excitement get to us. I’m sure we won’t become too arrogant.”

Robert Bauer: “If we can, we’ll do our best to improve the situation. 25 points haven’t saved anybody from relegation. It’s hard for us to be play dominantly, and we have to improve on that. But first of all, we have to make sure we hang on and continue building momentum.”

The injury substitutions:

Alexander Nouri: “Making two changes shortly after one another in the first-half is obviously frustrating. Clemens Fritz injured his ankle, whilst Zlatko Junuzovic has a back problem. We have to wait on the diagnosis for the two of them.”
