Moisander makes his Werder Bremen debut

The Green-Whites played out a goalless draw with second-division English side Huddersfield Town. Werder put in a better performance than against 1860 Munich and were, over long periods, the more forceful side in the Parkstadion. Werder head coach Viktor Skripnik was satisfied with the improvements: "The progress made since the last friendly was visible, the lads reacted well," said the boss post-match. After a largely uneventful first half, a number of fresh faces were introduced for the second 45 minutes. Fallou Diagne had the biggest chance to put Werder ahead with his head. Towards the end of the game, the tempo was raised somewhat: the best chance in the closing stages falling to Lennart Thy, but the game ended 0-0. 

Line-up and formation: As in the friendly against the Lions, Werder lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation. In goal, this time, was Czech Republic man Jaroslav Drobny. New signing Niklas Moisander celebrated his centre back debut for the Green-Whites. Luca Caldirola, Leon Guwara and Theodor Gebre Selassie stood alongside him to complete the back four. Sitting just in front of them was Lukas Fröde. Zlatko Junuzovic and Clemens Fritz played at centre mid, with Florian Kainz and Fin Bartels occupying the wings. At the top of the pack, Viktor Skripnik put Johannes Eggestein.  

UNEVENTFUL FIRST HALF FOR BOTH SIDES

14th minute: After almost quarter of an hour of probing, SV Werder created the first bit of danger. Luca Caldirola switched the play to Gebre Selassie who put a cross into the penalty area. Unfortunately no-one in Green and white was at the back post to finish. 

28th minute: Best chance of the game so far falls to the English side. Over the left hand side, Rajiv van La Parra drills the ball into the six-yard box where Ingolstadt loanee Elias Kachunga misses narrowly. 

38th minute: Luca Caldirola heads a dangerous free kick from Zlatko Junuzovic towards goal but only hits a defender. That could so easily have ended up in the back of the net!

43rd minute: The 24-year-old Kachunga brings down Werder’s Luca Caldirola and the two of them aggressively squared up to one another, head to head, before teammates came onto the scene to break them up. 

FALLOU DIAGNE WITH THE BIGGEST CHANCE OF THE GAME

54th minute: The first big chance of the second half falls to Werder Bremen. Izet Hajrovic crosses from the left towards the far post, Fallou Diagne jumps the highest and almost heads the Green-Whites in front, but half-time substitute keeper for Huddersfield - Luke Coddington reacted superbly to keep the effort out. 

76. Minute: A Hajrovic corner kick finds its way to Janek Sternberg, 30 yards from goal, who tries his luck on the half-volley but the ball zips whiskers wide of the post. Unlucky! 

77th minute: Only a minute later and SVW have the next chance to take the lead. Melvyn Lorenzen collides with goalkeeper Coddington on the edge of the box, the ball rolls back out into the path of Lennart Thy who tries to lift the ball over those in front of him with the keeper stranded, the ball took a bounce and went just over the cross bar. Good effort, but the referee had apparently already blown for a foul on the keeper. 

Conclusion: In an intense and physical goalless draw with few chances, the English side were largely harmless going forward and had no clear-cut chance to show for their efforts after 90 minutes. Fallou Diagne came closest to winning the game for Werder, but they are now two friendlies into the pre-season camp in Zillertal and still without a win.

Viktor Skripnik on the game: "It was a very disciplined performance against a robust side. Obviously we want to win, we didn’t have a lot of chances, but the ones we did create, like Lorezen’s or Diagne’s, we need to make more of."

Viktor Skripnik on Niklas Moisander: "Everyone saw that he is great on the ball, has good vision and conducts the youngsters well. He is an experienced player and definitely an asset to us. We expect that from him."
