SV Werder Bremen drew their third pre-season friendly 1-1 with VfB Lübeck on Saturday evening. Viktor Skripnik’s men got off to an excellent start thanks to Fin Bartels’ sixth minute strike, but they were unable to add to their advantage. Florian Kainz and Izet Hajrovic struck the woodwork but a late strike from Kubilay Büyükdemir saw the game end level.

Line-up and formation: Jaroslav Drobny made his debut for the club between the posts. Thanos Petsos, who was also appearing for the first time, played alongside Florian Grillitsch in the middle. Fin Bartels and Claudio Pizarro started up front, with Florian Kainz and Clemens Fritz supporting.

Bartels nets early on

6th Minute: The first chance of the game brings the opener. Thanos Petsos and Clemens Fritz link up well to create a chance for Fin Bartels. The forward remains calm and fires home.

23rd Minute: A loose touch from Santiago Garcia looks like it could problems, but Jaroslav Drobny reacts well to prevent the ball from dropping in.

24th Minute: A wicked delivery into the box narrowly misses Gary Noel – that was a close one!

39th Minute: Leon Guwara bursts past his man and unleases a powerful effort but the keeper claims after a deflection takes the sting out of it.

Last gasp equaliser

56th Minute: Stunning effort from Kainz! The new signing whips in a delightful free kick from well outside the box but Alexander Lange somehow manages to push it to safety.

58th Minute: Off the line! Fin Bartels manages to do just enough to prevent Gary Noel from equalising.

87th Minute: Izet Hajrovic almost continues his fine run of goalscoring form. The Bosnia international finds space but his powerful shot smacks the frame of the goal and pounce to safety.

88th Minute: Gálvez plays the ball back to Drobny but Kubilay Büyükdemir is alert to the move. The forward steals possession and fires home an equaliser.

Summary: Viktor Skripnik’s men showed plenty of attacking flair throughout the match, but were unable to grab a second goal. This lack of efficiency proved costly as a late mistake from Drobny resulted in the game ending 1-1.
