SV Werder Bremen opened their account for 2016/17 with a 2-1 victory over VSG Altglienicke in Berlin. Skripnik’s men went in front before the break thanks to a header from Fallou Diagne, with Izet Hajrovic wrapping up the success in the second half.

Tactics and line-up: Viktor Skripnik made 11 changes at the break, which enabled him to see as many members of his squad as possible. Michael Zetterer was in goal in the first half, with Florian Kainz and Fallou Diagne making their debuts. Luca Caldirola also featured. After the interval Milos Veljkovic, Lukas Fröde and Janek Sternberg all picked up valuable match practice.

Diagne strikes

6th Minute: Chance for Werder! Lukas Fröde flicks the ball into the path of Claudio Pizarro, but the Peru star fails to convert.

10th Minute: Patrick Kroll bursts into the box for the hosts but Diagne stops him from getting a shot off.

20th Minute: Claudio Pizarro almost gets his name on the scoresheet. The 37-year-old creates a chance for himself but Marcus Rickert is able to flick the ball to safety. Best chance of the game so far though!

39th Minute: Adrijan Antunovic tries to catch Zetterer out from long range, but the 21-year-old stands firm.

43rd Minute: Goal for SV Werder! Kainz sends over a pinpoint free kick, which Fallou Diagne powers into the back of the net.

Hajrovic grabs the winner

52nd Minute: Equaliser. Louis Stüwe heads the hosts level.

58th Minute: Izet Hajrovic picks up the ball in space after good work from Janek Sternberg but his effort drifts just wide.

60th Minute: Goal for Bremen! The returning Izet Hajrovic grabs the ball, nips past his man and unleashes an effort into the back of the net.

81st Minute: A heart in mouth moment for Werder fans. Milos Veljkovic goes down but, thankfully, returns to action after receiving treatment.

86th Minute: Maxi Eggestein has a great chance to wrap up the victory but his drive is blocked on the line by a defender.

Summary: Werder claim a 2-1 victory in their first pre-season friendly, thanks to goals from Fallou Diagne and Izet Hajrovic. They dominated the game, but the impact of a tough week on the training pitch was noticeable.
