With a battling team display and a bit of luck, Werder Bremen made it two away wins in a row on matchday 22 in the Bundesliga. VfL Wolfsburg were on the front foot for much of the game, but two early goals from Serge Gnabry in front of around 30,000 fans at the Volkswagen Arena were enough to secure a 2-1 victory and all three points for the Green-Whites. Borja Mayoral pulled a goal back within 60 seconds of the Germany international’s second, but the Wolves were unable to find a way past Felix Wiedwald for a second time.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Alexander Nouri was unable to stick to the same side that started the win over Mainz, with the midfield pairing of Clemens Fritz and Thomas Delaney ruled out through suspension and injury respectively. That meant starts for Milos Veljkovic and Maximilian Eggestein. Luca Caldirola and Florian Grillitsch were back in the squad, however, following spells on the sidelines.

Wiedwald keeps lead intact

10th minute: GOOOAAALLL! 1-0 to SVW! Werder’s energetic start is rewarded early on. Gustavo can only half clear Bauer’s low delivery and the ball lands at Serge Gnabry’s feet. He takes it past Arnold with a nutmeg and unleashes a shot, and a kind deflection off Rodriguez makes it unsavable for Benaglio.

11th minute: Ooof, it’s almost an immediate response. A failed clearance goes straight to Mayoral, but Wiedwald does well to deny the Spaniard from a tight angle.

18th minute: GOOOAAALLL!!! 2-0 to SVW! Bremen build on their fine start with a second goal. Junuzovic’s free kick from the by-line is headed on to the far post by Sané, and Gnabry is on hand to chest down and ruthlessly volley home from point-blank range.

19th minute: GOAL. VfL make is 2-1. That’s a frustrating one to conceded. Malli’s corner gets Wolfsburg back into the game. Didavi has a free header and the ball finds its way into the net via Mayoral’s chest.

22nd minute: Träsch’s cross finds Malli who looks to find the bottom corner with a header, but Wiedwald reacts well to keep him out.

26th minute: Wiedwald is keeping his team in this at the moment, making a good stop from Blaszczykowski’s daisy-cutter.

36th minute: Nothing Wiedwald can do about that, but the post comes to the rescue from Didavi’s free kick.

40th minute: Wolfsburg are looking dangerous and the woodwork denies them again. This time it’s goalscorer Mayoral who’s kept out.

Half time: A much-needed break for Werder. Wiedwald makes a save from Rodriguez just before the whistle to keep the lead intact after 45 minutes.

SVW see the result over the line

47th minute: It takes just over a minute for Wolfsburg to have their first chance of the second half, but Wiedwald is able to keep out Gusatvo’s dipping effort.

62nd minute: Way to use your head! Malli takes the ball off Kruse, works the space to shoot and pulls the trigger with his left, but Sané bravely sticks his forehead in the way to send the ball behind for a corner.

77th minute: Mario Gomez brilliantly nods a cross down to the edge of the box where Malli is waiting to strike. His effort is high and wild though.

92nd minute: Pizarro almost off the bench and onto the scoresheet. He looks to finish off a Werder counter, cutting inside and shooting, but his strike just clears the crossbar.

Full time: What a battle. It’s a big away win!

Summary: Unlike in Mainz, the Werder boys weren’t able to hold on to their early two-goal lead. The goal back gave Wolfsburg a boost, and while Bremen were under pressure for the remainder of the game, they defended resolutely and had a brilliant Wiedwald and the woodwork to thank that no further goals came. Nouri’s switch to a back five helped improved the Green-Whites’ stability during a difficult phase in the game, forcing Wolfsburg into long balls, which were dealt with comfortably enough. A team effort was ultimately rewarded with three important away points.
