Werder ended the 2016/17 season with an agonising defeat away to Borussia Dortmund. The Green-Whites kept the fight for Europe alive until the very end and ultimately finish the season in 8th place. Captain Zlatko Junuzovic gave Werder the lead in front of 81,360 fans at Signal Iduna Park. Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang turned the match in the home side’s favour before half-time. Werder levelled immediately after the break through Fin Bartels and Max Kruse put the away side into the lead in the 68th minute. However, two penalties won the game for Dortmund with Marco Reus winning and converting the first and Aubameyang scoring the second in the 88th minute to give Dortmund a 4-3 win.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Alexander Nouri was able to welcome back centre-back Niklas Moisander after suspension. Robert Bauer missed out after picking up five yellow cards. Ulisses Garcia came in at left-back and Theodor Gebre Selassie continued at right-back. Maximilian Eggestein dropped out of the midfield and was replaced by Florian Grillitsch. Serge Gnabry, who started the last game, came on off the bench at half-time.

Highlights:

3’ min.: WIEDWALD! Werder’s keeper is called into action early on as Dembélé‘s corner ends up at the feet of Aubameyang at the back post, but Dortmund’s striker is shut down quickly by Wiedwald.

7’ min.: GOOOAAALLL, 1-0 to Werder, Zlatko Junuzovic. Grillitsch plays in Bartels down the right who crosses the ball into the penalty area. Ulisses Garcia deflects the ball back across the box in a tussle with Erik Durm and Junuzovic is able to bundle the ball over the line. BVB keeper Bürki does his best to keep it out but replays show that the ball had crossed the line.

9’ min.: Werder get lucky! Durm has lots of space to cross the ball in from the right-hand-side. Aubameyang is wide open in the middle of the box, but his miss-timed header goes wide of the post.

15’ min.: Guerreiro chips the ball through to Reus on the left of the penalty area, but the Germany international is denied by the crossbar.

32’ min.: GOAL, 1-1, Marco Reus. Sahin takes a risk in midfield, but it pays off as he finds Kagawa who in turn finds Reus in space inside the area. The German makes no mistake as he keeps himself onside and slots past Wiedwald.

33’ min.: Werder almost re-take the lead immediately! Garcia plays in Junuzovic, but Werder’s captain is denied by the right arm of Bürki.

38’ min.: Some good play from Dortmund results in Kagawa’s shot being deflected by Wiedwald and the ball just evades Aubameyang at the back post and goes out for a corner.

42’ min.: GOAL, 2-1 to Dortmund, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Dembélé‘s chip down the middle finds Aubameyang and the striker swivels and volleys home. The ball beats Wiedwald and goes in off the underside of the crossbar.

45 + 1’ min.: Half-time in Dortmund. Time to breathe after a pulsating first-half.

SVW come back, but Dortmund take all three points

46’ min.: GOOOAAALLL, 2-2, Fin Bartels. What a start to the second period! Substitute Gnabry plays the ball to Junuzovic on the half-way line. Junuzovic finds Kruse on the left and Werder’s top scorer weaves his way into the penalty area and keeps his cool to lay the ball off for the onrushing Fin Bartels who makes no mistake as he fires into the Dortmund net.

52’ min.: Werder should really take the lead. Gnabry plays in Kruse in a two-on-one situation in the Dortmund half. Kruse is denied at the last moment by a saving tackle from Marc Bartra.

68’ min.: GOOOAAALLL, 3-2 to Werder, Max Kruse. Werder counter again and this time Kruse goes alone. The Werder striker goes through one-on-one with Bürki, his shot hits the keeper and loops into the top corner.

70’ min.: Double chance for Dortmund. Wiedwald parries Pulisic’s header and then tips Bartra’s bicycle kick over the bar.

74’ min.: GOAL, 3-3, Marco Reus. Dortmund’s captain drives into the Werder penalty area and is brought down by Gnabry. He gets up to take the penalty and makes no mistake.

77’ min.: BVB have the wind in their sails as Pulisic and Kagawa are both denied by Wiedwald in quick succession.

85’ min.: Kagawa plays in Guerreiro who fires a dangerous ball across the box but Sane brilliantly denies Reus with a saving challenge.

89’ min.: GOAL, 4-3 to Dortmund, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Pulisic goes down under the challenge of Bargfrede in the box and the referee points to the spot. Aubameyang makes no mistake and tucks in the bottom corner.

90 + 3’ min.: Full-time. Werder don’t have time to come back. Dortmund take the points.

Conclusion: Dortmund played with a high tempo and some good combination play from the outset. The Green-Whites had to see out wave after wave of Dortmund attacks. With the help of a little luck, Werder defended resolutely for most of the first-half and could have gone in level at the half-time. Alexander Nouri made a change for the second period and it worked immediately as substitute Gnabry started the move which saw Bartels fire in the equaliser.  A cracking run and finish from Kruse 20 minutes before the end gave Werder hope of a famous victory. However, Dortmund continued to throw everything at Werder two penalties made the result a bitter pill to swallow for the Green-Whites.
