Werder didn’t take any points from their final home Bundesliga game of the 2016/17 season as they lost 5-3 to 1899 Hoffenheim in a crazy match. TSG took the lead in the seventh minute through Adam Szalai and Andrej Kramaric doubled the visitors’ lead just four minutes later. Steven Zuber’s goal just before half.time was the low-point of what was a disappointing first-half from Bremen. Things didn’t get much better at the start of the second period for Werder. Kramaric got his second of the afternoon in the 49th minute and Ermin Bicakcic made it 5-0 in the 52nd. Werder refused to give up, however, and goals from Gebre Selassie (59‘), Philipp Bargfrede (86‘) and Robert Bauer (90‘) made the scoreline look a little more respectable, albeit Werder still went away from the match empty handed.

Line-up and formation: Head coach Alexander Nouri made changes to his formation and line-up for the game.  Niklas Moisander was suspended so Nouri switched to a back four of Robert Bauer, Milos Veljkovic, Lamine Sané and Theodor Gebre Selassie. Maximilian Eggestein returned to the starting XI and Nouri went with an attacking starting line-up which featured captain Zlatko Junuzovic, Thomas Delaney, Max Kruse, Fin Bartels and Serge Gnabry. Florian Grillitsch took a place on the bench.

Early goals give Hoffenheim control

Highlights:

7’ min.: GOAL, 1-0 to Hoffenheim, Adam Szalai. The guests take an early lead. Sané fails to clear on the edge of the Werder penalty area. Uth takes the ball from him and plays in Szalai who’s left-footed shot from the edge of the box bobbles into the left-hand corner of the goal.

11’ min.: GOAL, 2-0 to Hoffenheim, Andrej Kramaric. It’s too easy for the away side. Eggestein loses the ball on the half-way line and Kramaric receives a long diagonal ball wide on the left. He works his way into the box and finishes at the near post.

17’ min.: Werder show some promise in attack. Junuzovic tries a spectacular volley from just inside the area, but Süle blocks.

29‘ min.: Centimetres away! Eggestein wins the ball in midfield and some good play between Kruse and Bartels results in a shot from Gnabry which just misses.

37’ min.: Kruse plays a cross in from the left which the onrushing Gnabry meets with his head but it’s deflected away for a Werder corner.

40‘ min.: GOAL, 3-0 to Hoffenheim, Steven Zuber. The visitors get a third before the brewak. This time it’s Zuber who finds himself in space on the left and he cuts inside and bends the ball into the far corner of Wiedwald’s goal.

45 + 1’ min.: HALF-TIME: Stunned silence at the Weser-Stadion.

Werder win the second half

49’ min.: GOAL, 4-0 to Hoffenheim, Andrej Kramaric. The visitors extend their lead. Again it’s Kramaric and again it comes from the left. The Hoffenheim man cuts inside, beats Bauer and fires past Wiedwald.

52’ min.: GOAL, 5-0 to Hoffenheim, Ermin Bicakcic. Things go from bad to worse for Werder. Bicakcic heads in from a corner.

59’ min.: Junuzovic tries a shot which TSG keeper Baumann saves.

59’ min.: GOAL, 1-5, Theodor Gebre Selassie. Finally something for the Werder fans to cheer as Gebre Selassie heads in from Max Kruse’s cross.

62’ min.: Werder keep the pressure on. Kruse takes a shot which Baumann tips round the post.

64‘ min.: This time Bartels is denied by Baumann.

74’ min.: Kruse plays in Bauer who crosses for Veljkovic, but the defender’s shot is blocked at the last moment.

83’ min.: The ball is played towards ex-Werder man Sandro Wagner, but Wiedwald is quick off his line to deny the Hoffenheim attacker.

86’ min.: GOAL, 2-5, Philipp Bargfrede. Bauer picks the ball up in space on the right and crosses for substitute Bargfrede who turns the ball home.

90’ min.: GOAL, 3-5, Robert Bauer. Werder pull another one back as Bauer fires into the top corner from close range.

90 + 3’ min.: FULL-TIME at the Weser-Stadion. Bremen finish the game well, but still come away with a defeat.

Conclusion: The Green-Whites made it difficult for themselves with such a poor start. Hoffenheim’s front men Szalai and Kramaric capitalised on some sloppy defending from Werder.  Head coach Alexander Nouri had expected a tough match against the side which sits fourth in the Bundesliga. The goals either side of half-time really killed off any hope of Werder getting a result. The home side fought back valiantly, however, and can be proud of the way they narrowed the margin of defeat to just two goals.
