Werder came away from a difficult match in Freiburg with all three points. Thanks to some impressive and clinical attacking play, the Green-Whites were able to record a 5-2 victory in fron to of 24,000 fans in Schwarzwaldstadion and extend their unbeaten run to six matches. Max Kruse opened the scoring with a left-footed thunderbolt from outside the box in the 21st minute. Thomas Delaney put the visitors two up on the stroke of half-time. Werder’s Denemark international scored three goals in total and Fin Bartels also got on the scoresheet in the 71st minute. Nils Petersen (64’) and Vincenzo Grifo (77’) scored for Freiburg, but neither goal threatened the final result.

Line-up: Head coach Alexander Nouri had intended to leave his defence unchanged after the international break. It looked as though this would be the case until Lamine  Sané injured himself in the warm-up and had to be replaced in the starting line-up by Luca Caldirola who, after a lengthy injury absence, was made his first start for Werder since the second game of the season. Together with Milos Veljkovic and Niklas Moisander, Caldirola made up the three man Werder defence. Maximilian Eggestein came in for Zlatko Junuzovic, who missed out through injury. Max Kruse returned in attack and Claudio Pizarro dropped to the bench.

SVW shock Freiburg just before the break

Highlights:

12’ min.: The enforced change that Werder had to make before kick-off is noticeable. Freiburg start the game well and their captain Frantz has a shot which goes wide of the Werder goal.

21’ min.: GOOOAAALLL, 1-0 to Werder, Max Kruse. Wiedwald parries a free-kick round the post and then soon after, Max Kruse picks the ball up deep in the Freiburg half and unleashes a left-footed piledriver from 20 yards which flies past the keeper into the top corner.

31’ min.: Grifo strikes a free-kick which goes past the post and then Frantz loses his man, Delaney, for a split second and misses his shot by centimetres.

40’ min.: Another injury problem in the Werder defence: Robert Bauer tries to run off an injury he’s picked up, but eventually he has to be replaced by Santiago Garcia.

45’ + 2 min.: GOOOAAALLL, 2-0 to WERDER, Thomas Delaney. A perfect end to the half for Werder. A long diaganal pass from Veljkovic finds Garcia who plays a low cross into the box, Bartels lets it go through his legs and Delaney fires it into the back of the net from close range. Moments later the referee blows for half-time.

Five goals in the second-half

47’ min.: GOOOAAALLL, 3-0 to Werder, Thomas Delaney. The Green-Whites extend their lead. Kruse picks up the ball in the wide left position and crosses for Delaney, who’s deflected header loops over the keeper and into the bottom corner.

54’ min.: Bartels almost adds another as he races through the middle of the Freiburg defence after a superb through ball from Kruse, but is denied by a strong left hand from SC keeper Schwolow.

64’ min.: Penalty to Freiburg. Garcia leans into Maximilian Philipp in his own penatly area and the referee points to the spot after the Freiburg players falls to the floor.

64’ min.: GOAL, one back for Freiburg, 1-3, Nils Petersen. Shame! Wiedwald saves the penalty down low to his right, but the Freiburg penalty taker is the quickest to react and scores from the rebound.

71’ min.: GOOOAAALLL, 4-1 to Werder, Fin Bartels. Werder reinstate their three goal lead. Grillitsch lays Kruse’s pass off to Delaney who miss-hits his shot only for Bartels to react brilliantly inside the box and deflect the ball into the net with a clever back-heel.

77’ min.: GOAL, 2-4, Vincenzo Grifo. The visitors pull a goal back through Grifo’s superb finish from the edge of the box which sails past Wiedwald into the bottom corner.

85’ min.: GOOOAAALLL, 5-2 to Werder, Thomas Delaney. Incredible! Delaney scores his third as he finds himself in space and heads in Kainz’s cross at the back post.

90’ + 1 min.: Referee Wolfgang Stark ends the game and Werder take all three points from Breisgau.

Conclusion:
Alexander Nouri’s team needed a few minutes to adjust to the loss of Lamine Sané as Freiburg had the better of the opening exchanges. In the same way as against Leipzig, Werder struck with their first real shot at goal. Werder then defended resolutely, without penetrating the Freiburg back line when in attack.  Freiburg head coach Christian Streich made three changes at half-time, but Delaney’s second which came just after the whistle for the second period gave Werder breathing space. In the final 25 minutes, some lapses in concentration at the back meant it wasn’t as comfortable as it could have been for Werder, but the Bremen side continued to be clinical in attack and deserved the victory.
