Everything was going well until Aymen Barkok scored the winner for Eintracht Frankfurt in the 90th minute, leaving the fans in the Weser-Stadion stunned. Thanks to this last minute goal, Werder had to face a 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in front of a home crowd on Sunday evening. Midfielder Florian Grillitsch gave the Green-Whites the lead in the first half with an incredible strike. However, Alexander Meier equalised for the guests shortly after the second-half whistle. The two sides both had their share of chances throughout the second half, but it was Eintracht that managed to find the breakthrough and score the winner.

Line-up and formation: It’s been a long wait for the Werder fans, but they were pleased to see both Max Kruse and Claudio Pizarro back in the starting line-up for Sunday’s home game. Pizarro started upfront, with Junuzovic, Kruse and Gnabry playing just behind him. Captain Fritz and Grillitsch played in central midfield. Moisander, Veljkovic, Gebre Selassie and Santiago Garcia started in defence.

Werder rewarded for their first half effort

Highlights:

5 minutes: No one closes down Eintracht defender Abraham as he makes a run forward; however his shot from distance goes just over the Werder bar.

11 minutes: Kruse tests Hradecky for the first time with a swirling effort but the Eintracht goalkeeper manages to parry his shot away.

17 minutes: Eintracht Frankfurt are looking dangerous in attack. This time Fabian tries his luck from about 30 yards out but Wiedwald gets down well to make the save.

21 minutes: Gnabry makes a good run down the right hand side and gets a shot away from a tight angle. His effort goes just wide of the post.

34 minutes: Gnabry receives the ball on the edge of the area and gets a shot away on the turn. This time, his effort goes just a few yards over the crossbar.

36 minutes: Pizarro whips a cross in towards Kruse at the back post, but the forward can’t direct his header towards goal and the ball goes out of play.

38 minutes: GOOOOALL! Florian Grillitsch fires the ball into the top right hand corner from about 15 yards out. 1-0 to Werder!

45 + 1 minutes: Half-time at the Weser-Stadion! Werder are in the lead!

Unlucky result for Werder

51 minutes: Gnabry crosses the ball in from the byline to Junuzovic but he shoots just wide of the left post.

52 minutes: GOAL. Alexander Meier equalises for Eintracht. Meier latches onto a misplaced pass from Grillitsch and the Eintracht striker keeps his cool and slots the ball past Wiedwald into the net.

57 minutes: What a save from Wiedwald! The Werder goalkeeper finds himself one-on-one again with Meier but makes a great save to keep Werder in the game.

60 minutes: Wiedwald again! The Werder goalkeeper reacts well to keep out Chandler’s attempt on goal.

72 minutes: Philipp Bargfrede finally makes his return after being out injured for nine months, replacing goalscorer Grillitsch in midfield.

75 minutes: Claudio Pizarro inches away from scoring his first goal of this season for Werder but Hradecky manages to tip his shot over the crossbar.

86 minutes: The match was on a knife-edge. Will either team make the breakthrough?

90 minutes: GOAL. 2-1 to Frankfurt. Unbelievable! Aymen Barkok, who came on in the 75th minute, fires the ball into the top left corner from about 20 yards out. A real blow for Werder.

90 +3 minutes: Full-time at the Weser-Stadion. Defeat for Werder.

Conclusion: Frankfurt’s game plan was unmistakable. They played with the same confidence as they have been in every fixture so far this season. The guests looked dangerous in attack and they had a number of good efforts on goal from distance. Werder Bremen managed to find their feet about half an hour into the game. The Green-Whites were stringing passes together nicely and continued to increase the pressure on Frankfurt and eventually they were rewarded with Grillitsch’s goal. However, Eintracht Frankfurt were the stronger team in the second half, with both substitutes Alexander Meier and Aymen Barkok scoring to ensure that the visitors took home the three points.
