After two home wins in a row, Werder have succumbed to impressive promoted side SC Freiburg in front of a sold-out crowd at the Weser-Stadion (3-1). After a good start to the game, the visitors benefited from two pieces of disappointing Werder defending. First, Maximilian Philipp finished after a lovely solo run (29’) and ten minutes later, Vincenzo Grifo scored from the spot to put his side 2-0 up. Santiago Garcia halved the deficit with a controlled volley after a delightful chipped pass from Zlatko Junuzovic (67’). however, Freiburg restored their two-goal advantage to put the game out of the Green-Whites’ reach with 15 minutes to go.

Line-up: For the third game in a row, Alexander Nouri went with the same starting XI. Manneh was once again the lone striker in the coach's 4-1-4-1 system, as Gnabry and Hajrovic provided width for the Green-Whites. Grillitsch was once again deployed in the holding midfield role with Fritz and Junuzovic giving more attacking impetus ahead of him in the centre of midfield. The established back-four again consisted of Gebre Selassie, Sané, Moisander and Santiago Garcia, ahead of Felix Wiedwald between the sticks.

Freiburg take advantage of careless Werder defending

The highlights:

5th minute: Two chances for Werder as they make a positive start, firstly, Hajrovic stings the palms of Freiburg ‘keeper Alexander Schwolow with a long-range strike. Shortly after, Freiburg again have their goalkeeper to thank as he reacts quickly to parry Manneh’s header away with his fingertips.

15th minute: It’s Freiburg’s turn to attack. Höffler plays the ball out to Günter who’s forward on the left wing, he plays the ball into the box with a low cross to Philipp but he fires wide unmarked.

27th minute: Junuzovic has Werder’s first shot on goal in over 20 minutes as he whips in a free kick from a tight angle but Schwolow is again equal to it. The goalkeeper tips the ball over the bar.

29th minute: Goal, 1-0 to Freiburg through Maximilian Philipp. At the other end, Werder defend too passively as Philipp receives the ball from a throw in. He evades multiple Green-White challenges, firstly from Grillitsch and Junuzovic and then from Sané and Garcia on the edge of the box to eventually fire low into the bottom left corner.

38th minute: Penalty for Freiburg! The ball lands in the six yard box after an unnecessarily given-away corner. Manneh pulls Guedé’s shirt and referee Winkmann points to the spot – the correct decision.

39th minute: Goal, 2-0 through Vincenzo Grifo. Wiedwald guesses correctly but can’t quite reach the ball.

45+1st minute: Half time at the Weser-Stadion. Along with being two goal down, Lamine Sané’s injury, which also forced him off, is a further disappointment for the Green-Whites.

Abrashi with the perfect response to Garcia’s fine volley

46th minute: The game is back underway. Nouri makes an attacking change and brings on Fin Bartels for Florian Grillitsch.

50th minute: A great early chance to get back into the game! Gnabry plays Manneh in behind with a perfectly-times through ball but the teenager can only find the side netting from a tight angle.

64th minute: Nils Petersen is played through one-on-one by Grifo but the former Werder player is denied by Wiedwald and Philipp misses the target with his rebound.

67th minute: GOOAAAALL! Santiago Garcia makes it 2-1! Garcia passes the ball to Junuzovic on the edge of the box and continues his run into the penalty area. The Austrian finds the Argentine with an inch-perfect chipped pass and Garcia keeps his cool to volley home. Suddenly the game is wide open!

72nd minute: The game is very open now as Werder are pushing forward and Freiburg aren’t thinking about shutting up shop. Grifo tries his luck from from 20 yards but Wiedwald is behind it.

75th minute: Goal, 3-1 to Freiburg – Amir Abrashi with it. SCF restore their two-goal advantage as Moisander inadvertently heads the ball to him on the edge of the box. His shot is deflected and leaves Wiedwald with no chance.

87th minute: Time is running out for Werder as Fritz’ effort from outside the area is dragged wide.

90+3rd minute: Guido Winkmann blows his whistle to signal full time – SC Freiburg win 3-1 in Bremen.

Summary: Werder started meaningfully and had early chances but couldn’t continue this momentum throughout the half. The Green-Whites stood off Freiburg too much during their build-up play to try to win the ball back at the right time. This passiveness was eventually their downfall however, as Philipp was able to run through the Werder defence too easily to give his side the lead. Werder also had themselves to blame for the visitors’ second goal, as Manneh gave away a penalty which Grifo converted. In the second half, Werder got their game going again and reduced the deficit through Garcia. This strike inspired the crowd as well as his teammates. Wiedwald kept his team within touching distance of their opponents with his one-on-one save on Petersen but he couldn’t do anything to stop Freiburg’s deflected third goal. To be fair to the visitors, they were brave and never “parked the bus” - even towards the end of the game. This showed as their confidence and bravery were repaid as they killed off the game in the last 15 minutes as they got their third goal.
