It was a battle of wills, and Werder came out on top! The Green-Whites dug deep against FC Ingolstadt to triumph 2-1 at home on the twelfth Bundesliga matchday. It was a committed performance by SVW in front of 40,000 fans at the Weser-Stadion, against a direct rival in the table. Max Kruse’s first league goal in a Werder shirt put his side into the lead (24’), before Markus Suttner equalised directly from a free kick in the 58th minute. However, Werder weren’t disheartened by the visitors’ equaliser and retook the lead through Fin Bartels, who also assisted Kruse’s opener (76’).

Line-up: Alexander Nouri made three changes to last week’s starting XI in the Nordderby. The first change saw Lamine Sané, who had fully recovered from his knee injury, start ahead of Milos Veljkovic at centre-back. Philipp Bargfrede returned to the Werder starting XI for the first time since his long-term injury, replacing captain Clemens Fritz who was suffering from a cold. Bargfrede partnered Zlatko Junuzovic, who wore the captain’s armband today, in front of the defence. Finally, Thanos Petsos lost his starting place, as Claudio Pizarro played as the lone striker with Max Kruse dropping deeper. Fin Bartels and Serge Gnabry flanked Kruse to form a trident behind "Piza".

Kruse steals in at the front post

The highlights:

15th minute: A quarter of an hour is gone and neither side has managed to stamp their authority on proceedings. The game is mostly being played in the middle of the park.

21st minute: The visitors create the first real chance of the evening from a corner. Groß’ ball finds Jung on the penalty spot and his header is parried by Drobny, luckily, Hartmann can’t connect properly with the rebound and his effort goes wide.

24th minute: GOOOOAAAALLL! 1-0 to Werder, Max Kruse with the goal! Drobny’s kick finds Robert Bauer whose header frees Bartels on the right. The wide man whips in the ball towards to the front post and Max Kruse to delicately half volley past Hansen.

31st minute: Werder have a free kick in a dangerous position, just outside the box after Bargfrede was fouled. However, Kruse’s left-footed attempt flies slightly over the bar.

40th minute: With García and Kruse on the floor, FCI captain Matip starts a quick counterattack and finished the move with a shot which goes comfortably wide.

45+2nd minute: Pizarro has his first attempt of the match but can’t get over the ball and his shot loops over the bar. The referee blows for half time and Werder take a slight lead into the break.

Suttner equalises, but Bartels wins it for Werder

48th minute: After some nice combination play between Bartels, Kruse and Junuzovic, Gnabry receives the ball on the left, he makes some room for himself but can only find the side netting with his shot.

53rd minute: Mathew Leckie’s miss-hit cross almost deceives Drobny as the ball loops over him. However, the goalkeeper positions himself well and doesn’t have to intervene, as the ball goes out for a goal-kick anyway.

58th minute: Goal, Markus Sutter equalises for Ingolstadt. It was a delightfully hit free kick from Suttner, who beats Drobny from 25 yards.

60th minute: Almost straight after they concede, Werder go up the other end and carve out a huge chance. However, Bartels can’t finish with the outside of his foot after being send through on goal after a one-two with Pizarro.

68th minute: It’s trademark Gnabry. He beats his man and cuts inside from the left to unleash a shot. However, this time his effort doesn’t have the necessary power to trouble Hansen.

76th minute: GOOOOOOAAAAAAALLL! 2-1 to Werder, Fin Bartels! Hajrovic, who has just come on for Kruse, tries his luck from outside the box. Hansen saves but Gnabry keeps the ball alive, he squares it to Pizarro inside the six yard box but he too can’t put the ball in. The Peruvian keeps his cool though and lays Bartels off who makes no mistake, smashing the ball into the roof of the net from close-range.

83rd minute: The visitors are refusing to lie down and push for a second equaliser. Hartmann sets up Cohen who doesn’t make the most of an almost free shot from 18 yards.

90th minute: SVW get let off the hook. Moisander and Sané both go to clear Suttner’s long ball but neither cut it out, Leckie finds himself in front of goal but drags the ball wide.

90+4th minute: Full time is finally called after a nervy final ten minutes. Shortly before the final whistle, Drobny comes up with a huge save to deny a Hartmann header – the Czech saves the three points for his side.

Summary: Both sides set a good tempo to the game but the alert defences and quality tackling meant there weren’t many chances towards the start of the game. However, SVW were clinical and took advantage of their chance when it came. Overall, Werder looked well drilled to handle the visitors’ pressing and avoided losing the ball in their own half. After the restart, FCI were much more attacking and were rewarded for their courage with a goal. However, Nouri’s men didn’t want to settle for a point and showed a lot of commitment, fighting back and reclaiming the lead to hold on for a deserved three points.
