Werder marked the end of the first half of Bundesliga games this season with a 2-1 defeat at home to Borussia Dortmund. André Schürrle scored very early on for Dortmund (5’), before Werder were reduced to ten men after Jaroslav Drobny was adjudged to have brought down Marco Reus (39’). Despite being a man down, Werder still managed to create some good chances with captain Clemens Fritz inches away from equalising after he hit the crossbar. In the second half, Fin Bartels did find the equaliser for Alexander Nouri’s side (58’), before Dortmund went back into the lead through Lukasz Piszczek (71’). Dortmund saw out the rest of the game to take away all three points.

Line up: Thomas Delaney made his competitive debut for Werder. In what was a 4-4-2 formation, the new signing took up a place in the centre of the park alongside captain Clemens Fritz. Lamine Sané returned to fitness just in time for the game and started at centre-back, with Niklas Moisander, Santiago Garcia and Robert Bauer making up the rest of the back four. Fin Bartels and Serge Gnabry took up their usual positions out wide, with Max Kruse playing just off Claudio Pizarro up top. Goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny was in goal and made his 200th Bundesliga appearance.

Dortmund off to lightning start

1st minute: With just 20 seconds on the clock, Pizarro, Kruse and Gnabry look to capitalise on a Dortmund mistake in their build-up play. Pizarro has a lot of room and looks to play through Gnabry, but the pass isn’t quite precise enough. Nevertheless, a promising start.

5th minute: Goal for Dortmund. The visitors pounce on Werder’s first mistake at the back. Marco Reus takes a heavy touch and the ball falls in to the path of Serge Gnabry. His pass back, however, falls straight to André Schürrle, who rounds Jaroslav Drobny and finishes into an empty net.

11th minute: Drobny prevents a second Dortmund goal. Once again, it is a succession of tackles flying in and the ball again lands at the feet of Schürrle. He then fires of a shot on the turn, but doesn’t have enough power on the shot. Drobny therefore has enough to scramble round and save the shot from going in the far corner. Overall, it is an anxious opening period for Werder, as Dortmund dominate the play and the possession, in no short part to Werder’s own lack of control on the ball.

18th minute: Werder with a good chance to equalise. Finally a move going forward goes to plan. Thomas Delaney, Santiago Garcia and Max Kruse exchange passes before the ball makes its way to Fin Bartels in space. He sets himself to shoot on the edge of the box, but he can’t beat Weidenfeller in the Dortmund goal, who makes a good save.

27th minute: Werder manage to overcome the early spell of pressure from Dortmund, but suffer another bit of bad news as Serge Gnabry is forced off through injury. Miols Veljkovic comes on in his place, as Alexander Nouri switches to five at the back.

35th minute: What a chance for Werder! Max Kruse whips a ball into the box from a free-kick out on the left which lands at the feet of Thomas Delaney. His left-footed shot from close range is saved by Weidenfeller, but the rebound falls to Niklas Moisander. The Finn shoots from a tight angle but can’t direct his effort on goal. Werder look threatening all of a sudden.

Drobny sees red, Fritz unlucky with shot

39th minute: Jaroslav Drobny receives a red card! A long ball over the Werder defence sees Reus and Drobny in a sprint to win the ball. Drobny comes 30 yards out of his goal to clear the danger, but is a touch late as he catches Reus. Referee Daniel Siebert decides it is a professional foul and dismisses Drobny from the park. Pizarro is substituted as a result to make way for the substitute keeper Felix Wiedwald. It’s just what Werder didn’t need.

45th+2 minute: Clemens Fritz shakes the frame of the goal with a wonderful effort. So unlucky for the Green-Whites. The captain cuts inside from the edge of the box to make space and fires a curling effort past Weidenfeller. However, the ball hits the bar and eventually bounces to safety. No goal.

45th minute: Half time at the Weser Stadion. SVW have a mountain to climb. An early goal for the visitors, chances missed by Werder, a red card for Drobny and Fritz hitting the bar before the break. There’s only one option left in the second half and that’s fighting until the end.

50th minute: Werder continue to try and pressure the ball and force the visitors into a mistake. The fight and determination is there, perhaps the Green-Whites can get a result after all.

58th minute: Felix Wiedwald prevents Dortmund going 2-0 up. Marco Reus has a lot of space on the left edge of the box, but can’t beat Werder’s keeper.

Bartels gives Werder reason to cheer but Piszczek responds

59th minute: GOOOOOOAAAAALL! Can you believe it? Werder’s number 22 is played through after a headed flick on Clemens Fritz. There is still a lot do, however, as Bartels beats Ginter for pace and fends off Sokratis, before coolly slotting the ball past Weidenfeller. WHAT A GOAL!

70th minute: Dortmund look to respond and apply the pressure going forward. For Werder, the game is now all about holding on to what they have. The fans in the sold out Weser-Stadion are also well aware of the game plan and cheer on the home side relentlessly. Dortmund shake things up with a double substitution. Ousmane Dembele and Raphael Guerreiro replace Marco Reus and Gonzalo Castro.

71st minute: Surely not! Dortmund are ahead again and it is yet another fortunate one. Guerreiro looks to cross into the box, but his attempt is deflected. The rebound loops over the whole of the Werder defence and falls to Lukasz Piszczek, who sticks out a leg and beats Wiedwald.

80th minute: Last change made by Bremen. Florian Kainz comes on to replace the skipper, Clemens Fritz. Ten minutes to go. Do Werder have something up their sleeve?

88th minute: Werder keep fighting and fighting and win two corners for their efforts. Both opportunities come to nothing, however.

90th+3 minute: Full time at the Weser Stadion. Werder leave empty-handed despite a battling second half performance.

Summary: Werder would have feared the worst following the opening period of play. Mistakes were being made and Dortmund had all of the best opportunities to score more goals, following their early lead. Only after half an hour did Werder really begin to tick and had good chances of their own to find an equaliser. Werder were on the right track and showed a lot of fight, despite the fact that Serge Gnabry was forced off early and Jaroslav Drobny was sent off within the first 45 minutes. After the break, Werder continued to apply the pressure on Dortmund. They reward through Bartels’ fine effort in the 59th minute. However, Lamine Sané lapse of concentration at the back, played Piszczek onside and allowed Dortmund to restore their lead. Despite a determined fight back, Werder left empty handed, owing also to the fact that the side made small mistakes in both halves. Werder welcome table-toppers Bayern München to the Weser-Stadion next Saturday, with the game kicking off at 15:30 CET.
