1st minute: With just 20 seconds on the clock, Pizarro, Kruse and Gnabry look to capitalise on a Dortmund mistake in their build-up play. Pizarro has a lot of room and looks to play through Gnabry, but the pass isn’t quite precise enough. Nevertheless, a promising start.
5th minute: Goal for Dortmund. The visitors pounce on Werder’s first mistake at the back. Marco Reus takes a heavy touch and the ball falls in to the path of Serge Gnabry. His pass back, however, falls straight to André Schürrle, who rounds Jaroslav Drobny and finishes into an empty net.
11th minute: Drobny prevents a second Dortmund goal. Once again, it is a succession of tackles flying in and the ball again lands at the feet of Schürrle. He then fires of a shot on the turn, but doesn’t have enough power on the shot. Drobny therefore has enough to scramble round and save the shot from going in the far corner. Overall, it is an anxious opening period for Werder, as Dortmund dominate the play and the possession, in no short part to Werder’s own lack of control on the ball.
18th minute: Werder with a good chance to equalise. Finally a move going forward goes to plan. Thomas Delaney, Santiago Garcia and Max Kruse exchange passes before the ball makes its way to Fin Bartels in space. He sets himself to shoot on the edge of the box, but he can’t beat Weidenfeller in the Dortmund goal, who makes a good save.
27th minute: Werder manage to overcome the early spell of pressure from Dortmund, but suffer another bit of bad news as Serge Gnabry is forced off through injury. Miols Veljkovic comes on in his place, as Alexander Nouri switches to five at the back.
35th minute: What a chance for Werder! Max Kruse whips a ball into the box from a free-kick out on the left which lands at the feet of Thomas Delaney. His left-footed shot from close range is saved by Weidenfeller, but the rebound falls to Niklas Moisander. The Finn shoots from a tight angle but can’t direct his effort on goal. Werder look threatening all of a sudden.
