Werder will have to wait until the next Bundesliga matchday to win their first points of the season. In the Saturday evening kick-off before 52,000 fans, Borussia Mönchengladbach earned a deserved 4-1 win over the Green-Whites. The hosts' first-half display showed that they meant business, as Werder had no reply to Gladbach’s ice-cold finishing. Thorgan Hazard opened the scoring in the 11th minute and got his and Borussia's second just six minutes later. Raffael also scored a brace, the first coming from the penalty spot in the 21st minute, the striker then grabbed his second and Borussia’s fourth shortly before half-time. Werder performed much better in the second half, conceding no goals and Serge Gnabry scored a wonder goal to open his account for his new team. The game however ended on a sour note as Aron Johannsson was sent off for dissent with ten minutes to go.

Line-up: Head coach Viktor Skripnik went with a 4-2-3-1 formation and made four changes to his line-up from last week’s encounter with FC Augsburg. Jaroslav Drobny started in goal instead of Felix Wiedwald, while Fallou Diagne replaced the injured Luca Caldirola in central defence. Ulisses Garcia made his first start since November 2015 at left-back and Robert Bauer started in holding midfield next to captain Clemens Fritz. Sambou Yatabare started on the right-wing in place of Fin Bartels who is suffering with an adductor problem. Zlatko Junuzovic started behind Gnabry, who played as the lone striker, meaning there was no room for last week’s goal scorer, Aron Johannsson.

Werder at sea, Raffael and Hazard bag braces

5th minute: Fallou Diagne plays a weak back-pass to Drobny and it’s intercepted by Hazard who rounds the goalkeeper. Diagne made up for his sloppy pass though by sliding in on the line to block the Belgian’s shot.

8th minute: Gladbach pile on more early pressure as Stindl plays Hazard through but his half-volley from a tight angle is saved acrobatically by Drobny.

11th minute: Goal, 1-0 to Gladbach - Hazard makes no mistake with his third chance. Werder’s back four is high and Raffael sends him through on goal to coolly slot past Drobny.

17th minute: Goal, 2-0 to Gladbach. The hosts double their lead and it’s Hazard again. A long ball from Vestergaard put Hazard in and he keeps his cool again to finish.

20th minute: Penalty to Gladbach. Selassie tries to clear the ball but his clearance only hits Diagne, the ball then falls favourably for Stindl and he’s taken down by Drobny.

21st minute: Raffael smashes the ball into the roof of the net, Drobny had no chance. 3-0.

29th minute: Hazard is doing as he pleases. The Belgian plays a one-two with Johnson in the Werder penalty area, he then sends the ball to the back post where Sané intervenes just in time ahead of Raffael.

39th minute: Gladbach once again get behind the Werder backline, this time Johnson forces a tremendous one-leg save from Drobny in a one-on-one.

41st minute: Goal for Gladbach, 4-0. Johnson crosses the ball to Raffael from the right side, Sané however can’t clear properly and the Borussia striker volleys in on the turn from six yards out.

45th minute: The referee blows for half time. The Werder players are relieved to hear the whistle.

A Gnabry consolation and Johannsson sees red

46th minute: The second half gets underway. Skripnik makes two changes as Fritz and Diagne make way for Niklas Moisander and Aron Johannsson.

55th minute: Werder apply themselves a lot better after the break. As a result, Gnabry’s inviting ball is played through to Yatabaré, who is afforded a lot of space on the right. However, he blasts the ball over from a good position.

66th minute: The game settles down, with Borussia defending their lead confidently. Werder are clearly more confident on the ball in comparison to the first-half and are trying to make things happen.

69th minute: Bremen’s best attacking options so far, Aron Johannsson, Garcia and Gnabry work well together in a triangle leading to a chance from the edge of the box from Garcia. Yann Sommer in the Borussia goal saves comfortably.

71st minute: Grillitsch tries an effort on goal which can only be parried by Sommer back into the box. Johannsson reacts quickly to the rebound, but his follow-up shot is blocked by Vestergaard and Sommer.

73rd minute: GOAL, Bremen make it 4-1 through Serge Gnabry. It may have only been a consolation goal, but what a goal it was! Gnabry latches on to Johannsson’s chipped ball over the top and hammers it into the Borussia net from the edge of the box. An absolute screamer!

76th minute: Gladbach find a bit of purpose for the first time in the second half. Hazard fires a low shot at goal which cannons into the post.

80th minute: Red card for Aron Johannsson. Werder’s attacker makes his protests to referee Stieler after a challenge with Dahoud. The referee then unhesitatingly shows Johannsson a red card. Whatever was said, it was wholly unnecessary.

90th minute: Referee Stieler brings an end to the game. Werder lose 4-1.

Summary: Careless and naive defending from the very beginning by the entire Bremen side, coupled with falling asleep in the opening minutes of the game led to a dismal first half, completely putting the team on the wrong track far too early in the match. With their high tempo and their simple, direct play, the hosts overpowered the Green-Whites, who were far too open at the back. Werder did at least show a different side to them after half time, with Serge Gnabry scoring a dream first goal as a as a consolation on what was a dreadful evening.
