There is it! In front of 42,100 spectators at the Weser-Stadion, Werder claimed their second win of the season against Champions League participants Bayer Leverkusen (2-1). Zlatko Junuzovic put the hosts in the lead in the 13th minute after starting very positively. However, Leverkusen got back on level terms a little before the half-hour mark. After withstanding some Leverkusen pressure for the rest of the first half, the Green-Whites again took the lead through Ousman Manneh’s first Bundesliga goal (59’) and earned a deserved victory.

Line-up: Alexander Nouri made two changes to the starting eleven which drew 1-1 last week with Darmstadt. Felix Wiedwald stepped in for the injured Jaroslav Drobny, after the Czech broke his hand in two places while on international duty. Also, Santiago Garcia was handed his first Bundesliga start at left-back after missing out for three months with an injury, meaning Robert Bauer started from the bench this time. Nouri stuck with his 4-1-4-1 formation which has been steadily improving since taking charge.

Junuzovic gets an early opener, but Bayer respond well

Highlights:

3rd minute: Good play from Werder right from the start. Gnabry brings down Grillitsch’s lofted ball, goes round Henrichs and crosses it in with the outside of his boot towards the far post, but there was no one there.

11th minute: First chance for Bayer Leverkusen. Hakan Calhanoglu’s curling free kick from around 25 yards goes just wide of the top corner.

13th minute: GOOOOAAAAL! 1-0 to Werder. Zlatko Junuzovic puts the hosts in front. Gebre Selassie receives the ball on the right wing and squares it into the box but Manneh’s shot is blocked from about ten yards out. Luckily, Junuzovic is lurking behind latches onto the second ball - his bouncing left-footed shot goes in.

27th minute: Goal. 1-1. Equaliser for Bayer Leverkusen. An unexpected equaliser after Werder have been dominating the match until this point. Kampl gets a cross in from the byline and the unnoticed Calhanoglu heads the ball into the corner from around 12 yards out.

29th minute: Bayer 04 have two dangerous chances on goal within 60 seconds. Firstly, Calhanoglu tests Wiedwald from a distance and then Chicharito shot goes just inches wide of the post.

43rd minute: Once again, the outstanding Calhanoglu has a shot towards goal but Wiedwald gets down quickly and parries the ball away from goal.

45th+1 minute: Referee Marco Fritz blows the whistle for half-time. Gnabry leaves the field just a few minutes before and is replaced by Fin Bartels.[]

Ousman Manneh - the match-winner!

53rd minute: The game was mostly in Leverkusen’s hands in the lead-up to the break, but it has been more equal so far in the second half. The Green-Whites are showing their attacking ability. Manneh puts in his first direct effort on goal in some time after Junuzovic puts him through, but Bernd Leno makes the save.

59th minute: GOOOOAAAAL! 2-1 to Werder, Ousman Manneh! Werder are back in front! Leverkusen expect Hajrovic to deliver his free kick into the mixer, but he surprises them by sliding a low pass into Junuzovic on the edge of the area. His effort was blocked, but it bounced across the penalty area, falling just to edge of the penalty spot where Ousman Manneh is stood waiting. Instinctively, the young centre forward fires his shot past Leno and restores Werder’s advantage!

63rd minute: Another chance for Werder as Bartels attempts to complete a counterattack with a half volley on the turn, but hits his attempt a little over the bar.

79th minute: We are into the final stages of the match. Leverkusen are pushing hard for the equaliser but finding little joy against Werder’s back line. Moisander rises high to connect with Junuzovic’s free kick but he cannot keep his header down to get it on target.

89th minute: The clock is ticking down. Ulisses Garcia works well down the left side to create another goalscoring chance, but Leno prevents Manneh from making it 3-1.

94th minute: Wiedwald gathers up Tah’s late header and referee Marco Fritz blows his whistle! The fans in the Weser-Stadion are delighted!

Conclusion: Werder put in an impressive performance in a high quality game. Alexander Nouri’s side were alert and concentrated throughout the match and fought for every ball. They also did not over-commit offensively and stayed calm and measured in their attacking and defensive play, which allowed them to counter swiftly - this was also vital in allowing them to reclaim the lead. However, Leverkusen claiming an equaliser out of nothing worked against the home side, as they then became the better side for the last part of the second half. Bremen were impressive after the break and this performance led to their second win in a Saturday evening fixture this season. However, the end of the match was tense and the final whistle couldn’t have come sooner for Werder. The hosts were, however, composed throughout the match and managed to secure another home victory.
