Werder were always in the game and in reach of an equaliser, but the Green-Whites remain without a point in 2017 after losing narrowly to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Bundesliga matchday 20 (1-0). In front of a sold-out crowd at the Weser-Stadion, the visitors went into the lead after just 12 minutes through Thorgan Hazard. Werder’s best chance came from Fin Bartels soon after going behind, but the winger couldn’t finish a one-on-one with Sommer. After the break, the Fohlenelf were not as adventurous and allowed the hosts more of the ball, but despite this, SVW failed to convert the openings they created.

Line-up: Claudio Pizarro and Niklas Moisander recovered from their injuries and returned to the Werder matchday squad. While the striker started from the bench, the centre-back slotted into the left-hand side of the back-three. Santiago Garcia, who was suspended for last week’s Augsburg game, also reclaimed a starting spot, as he was deployed in the left wing-back role. No changes were made up front from the clash with FCA, so Bartels, Kruse and Gnabry again formed a three-pronged attack.

Gladbach counter, Hazard finishes

2nd minute: Bremen start meaningfully, as Max Kruse gets the first shot on goal of the game. The No. 10 shoots on the turn but his shot lacks the power to trouble Yann Sommer.

12th minute: Goal - Borussia take the lead. A typical Gladbach goal – they counter quickly, Christoph Kramer feeds Thorgan Hazard on the right who gets away from the Werder defence. The Belgian keeps his cool and finishes past Felix Wiedwald from a tight angle.

17th minute: Bartels! Five minutes after going behind, Werder should equalise through Fin Bartels. However, our No. 22 can’t send the ball past Sommer from seven yards after some nice interplay on the edge of the Borussia box. Until now, definitely SVW’s best chance.

24th minute: Gladbach almost make it 2-0. Andre Hahn is lurking at the back post and the cross comes to him, but he volleys over. A minute later, Herrmann squanders a good opportunity as Wiedwald comes out to meet him quickly.

29th minute: Bartels has been Werder’s best attacking threat this half, as he gets another shot off. However, his first-time effort from 20 yards goes wide.

36th minute: The match has gone a little flat, neither side is doing much of note. Max Kruse makes some space for himself, but Sommer gets right behind his right-footed shot from outside the box.

44th minute: Dangerous for Bremen! Veljkovic injures himself in a challenge and Borussia carry on attacking. Hazard crosses from the right to Hahn, who could have headed on goal himself, but wants to set up a teammate. Luckily for Werder, the ball only finds Bauer who can clear.

SVW fail to make most of possession

49th minute: Head coach Alexander Nouri makes a double substitution at half time, bringing on Pizarro and Gebre Selassie for Garcia and Veljkovic. The Peruvian has a chance almost immediately after coming on from a corner, but Sommer denies him.

52nd minute: The visitors are allowed far too much space. Gebre Selassie loses an important challenge and Andre Hahn bears down on goal. His left-footed effort is parried by Wiedwald.

67th minute: Gladbach look content with their advantage and are allowing Bremen more of the ball. The Green-Whites are looking more adventurous and play a quick attack through Bartels who finds Delaney on the penalty spot. At the last moment, Jantschke makes a decisive block. Moments later, the next cross falls to Pizarro, who heads into the arms of Sommer from close-range.

84th minute: Werder are throwing everything at it - you can’t accuse them of not trying. However, Gladbach are on high-alert and are defending well, making it hard for SVW to create any more clear-cut chances. Johannsson, who was just subbed on, heads Bartels' cross over from a promising position.

90th minute: Kruse again puts the ball into the area and Sommer comes to challenge for it and then falls after a coming-together. Shortly after, the referee blows his whistle and Werder lose narrowly, 1-0.

Summary: Werder suffered the same defensive problems as the home game against Borussia last year, as Hazard’s only goal of the game was helped by the Green-White’s defence being too high. Garcia gambled and left the Belgian too much space which he took advantage of. After this, Werder improved and should have scored with chances both in the first and second half, espeically Bartels' 17th minute opportunity. Meanwhile, Gladbach remained dangerous on the counter throughout the game. In the end, SVW couldn’t make the most of their possession to get the equaliser which their probing would have merited.
