SV Werder remain undefeated in eight consecutive games. The away game against Eintracht Frankfurt ended in a 2-2 draw. SVW were ruthlessly clinical with their chances in the first half, earning the lead and then doubling it through Zlatko Junuzovic (37’) and Fin Bartels (43’). Straight after the break came Gacinovic’s goal from a corner that was headed on by David Abraham (48’) and Marco Fabian’s penalty (73’) then nullified Werder’s lead. The closing stages of the game was competitive and end-to-end, wherein both teams had opportunities to claim all three points, but ultimately, the teams could not be separated.

Lineup and formation: Owing to an injury, midfielder Thomas Delaney was replaced in the starting lineup by Maximilian Eggestein. Fin Bartels also received the nod to start from manager Alexander Nouri, whilst Claudio Pizzaro was relegated to the bench. Aside from those changes, it was the same eleven that were victorious against Schalke.

5th minute: First shot from SVW. Max Kruse’s left-footed shot ends up in the arms of Lukas Hradecky. A hectic start overall, with multiple long balls and several challenges taking place.

10th minute: Lucky for Werder! David Abraham smashes his long-range shot against the bar. Shortly thereafter, Branimir Hrgota just fails to latch onto Marco Fabian’s ball across the ball. Eintracht are clearly on top here.

15th minute: SVW’s first extended period on the ball culminates in a huge opportunity. Theo Gebre Selassie sets Zlatko Junuzovic free in the penalty area, but instead of shooting he opts to try square the ball back to the penalty spot, and the Frankfurt defenders are quick to block it. Still, good play from the Green-Whites.

27th minute: Wiedwald! The SVW keeper denies Mijat Gacinovic first, and then throws himself in front of Hrgota’s follow-up shot. Awesome from the shot-stopper! Alexander Nouri opts to take off Milos Veljkovic not long after, who was already in danger of being sent off after picking up an early yellow card. Florian Kainz is on in his place.

37th minute: GOOOOAL for SVW! Zlatko Junuzovic makes good on Florian Kainz’s delivery. The freshly brought on Kainz dances around Timothy Chandler and finds his fellow Austrian, who hits it on the turn with his left foot, and the ball creeps in under the crossbar.

43rd minute: AND ANOTHER ONE! A double for Werder, and this time it’s Fin Bartels who puts the ball into the back of the net. A masterful aerial ball lands at the feet of Bartels, who plays a one-two with Kruse and beats Hradecky with an outside of the boot looping shot. A wonderful goal!

45th minute: Half-time in Frankfurt. Werder have been deadly clinical, and it’s fantastic to see!

An equaliser from the penalty-spot

48th minute: Goal for Frankfurt. A corner results in Mijat Gacinovic getting the ball over the line. Eintracht reduce the lead to 2-1.

53rd minute: Werder have to make another substitution. Luca Caldirola leaves the game, and Ulisses Garcia comes on in his place.

65th minute: Similar to on Tuesday, SVW have a lot of room to play with on the counter. The boys know that one more goal for Werder will see them out for the rest of the game.

72nd minute: Frankfurt equalise. Marco Fabian converts a penalty after Niklas Moisander brought down Branimir Hrgota in the box.

76th minute: Centimetres away from regaining the lead. A cross from Kainz is nodded on by Gebre Selassie onto Grillitsch. His shot avoids Hradecky’s fingertips, but the ball dips over him and is also wide of the goal.

80th minute: Danny Blum gets a bit lucky to receive the ball shortly outside the penalty area, takes a touch but his effort misses the target. Both teams are playing for a win.

88th minute: The batteries of the players are noticeably lacking after the mid-week fixtures, but they’re still giving it their all out there in the hope of securing all three points. Werder are on top ever so slightly at the moment.

89th minute: Kruse could’ve scored the winner there. Junuzovic plays the ball from the left into the path of the onrushing Kruse, but he hits Abraham with his shot. What a chance!

90th+3 minute: There’s the whistle. Werder can’t be separated from Eintracht Frankfurt as it ends 2-2.

Conclusion: The first-half was a thing of beauty for Werder fans. The opponents had more of the ball, but Werder had more goals. The double before the break was proof of the side’s ability to be clinical. Frankfurt’s first goal after the break didn’t do much to change Werder’s approach to the game, but SVW failed to extend their lead. Instead, they were punished for a lapse in concentration on defense. Following that, Werder intensified their offensive efforts, and in the closing minutes Kruse had the biggest chance at scoring the winner, but unfortunately, the teams have to be satisfied with a point each.
