The first win of the new year was in touching distance, but despite going into the lead twice, SV Werder left the WWK Arena empty-handed. The Green-Whites lost 3-2 due to two late FCA goals which turned the game around. In front of 26,812 spectators, Theodor Gebre Selassie opened the scoring in the 26th minute, however, just two minutes later, Augsburg equalised through Jonathan Schmid. After the break, Werder took the lead for the second time, as Max Kruse scored from the spot. Nevertheless, despite some good chances while still 2-1 up, the hosts managed to flip the game on its head. First Ja-Cheol Koo made it 2-2, before Bobadilla won it for FCA with almost the final kick of the game.

Line-up: Claudio Pizarro (thigh) and Niklas Moisander (muscle injury) both picked up injuries in last week’s game against FC Bayern and missed this one. Santiago Garcia also missed out after receiving his fifth yellow card in the same tie. However, Fin Bartels was available again after sitting out with the flu and started. For the first time since November, Gebre Selassie played from the first minute, as he occupied the left wing-back spot. Meanwhile for Ulisses Garcia, it was his first time in the starting XI since matchday three, as he was deployed in place of Moisander in the back-three.

Gebre Selassie’s opener quickly cancelled out

The highlights:

9th minute: FCA have the first clear goal-scoring opportunity, but Felix Wiedwald is equal to Bobadilla’s right-footed effort from inside the box.

17th minute: Max whips a ball into the box where Bobadilla is left alone. However, the striker cannot stretch enough and does not get a meaningful contact on the ball which goes wide.

23rd minute: After some good play by Robert Bauer down the right, Junuzovic reacts the quickest to get a shot away from a tight angle. Marvin Hitz is there though and saves at the front post.

26th minute: GOOOAAAL! 1-0 to Werder, Theodor Gebre Selassie! Delaney keeps Junuzovic’s free kick in with his head at the back post. A Werder player, this time Bauer, rises highest and finds Gebre Selassie who finishes from close range.

28th minute: GOAL, 1-1, Jonathan Schmid equalises. Bobadilla beats Garcia and finds Schmid very nicely, the Frenchman holds off Sané and finishes low past Wiedwald at the near post.

33rd minute: Gebre Selassie is again making a nuisance of himself but the Czech cannot direct his shot on target after receiving the ball from Kruse’s cross from the right.

41st minute: Despite a lack of goal-scoring chances since the goals, it is an end-to-end game.

45th minute: Referee Dingert brings the first half to an end.

Werder give away the three points

56th minute: Augsburg have started the second period in a more defensive fashion, sitting back and allowing Bremen more possession.

64th minute: Penalty to Werder! Gnabry shows some very quick feet to evade the challenges of the FCA defenders, he makes his way into the box and is brought down by Kohr and Hinteregger. The referee points to the spot!

65th minute: GOOOOAAAALL! 2-1 to Werder, Max Kruse! Our No. 10 sends Marwin Hitz the wrong way!

76th minute: A great chance to finish the game!! Kruse is again involved, he scoops the ball over the FCA defence but Aron Johannsson, who has just been introduced for Fin Bartels, miscues his volley and the ball rolls wide.

79th minute: GOAL, 2-2, Ja-Cheol Koo. Out of nothing, Werder concede. FCA captain Verhaegh isn’t challenged and puts the ball into the box, Koo gets away from Delaney and finishes from inside the six-yard box.

83rd minute: The hosts now have the momentum after equalising, Max’s free kick almost dips under the bar but Wiedwald gets there just in time to divert the ball over.

86th minute: Serge Gnabry with a free kick from around 23 yards, but Hitz gets across his goal to push the ball wide.

90th minute: GOAL, 3-2 to Augsburg, Raúl Bobadilla. Unbelievable. Bobadilla outmuscles Garcia inside the box and fires the ball past Wiedwald, who did get a hand on it but couldn’t keep the ball out.

94th minute: Full time, what a disappointing end.

Summary: Defensively, the couple of absentees affected the Green-Whites, as the SVW back-line often left their opponents with a too much space in the box. Werder grew into the game which was evidenced by the fact they took the lead. However, it was an advantage which didn’t last long as the hosts struck back just a couple of minutes after conceding. The rest of the half was a boxing match as both teams took turns attacking. After the break, despite being the visitors, Werder were the more positive and were rewarded with a goal. The Green-Whites could have extended their 2-1 lead and put the game to bed with a couple of chances. In the end, Nouri’s men were punished for not being clinical enough.
