Three  big points on the board for Werder! SV Werder Bremen got their first points of the calendar year with a 2-0 away win against 1. FSV Mainz. Serge Gnabry's looping header put Werder ahead in the 16th minute, and was followed quickly by Thomas Delaney's first goal for the Green-Whites - an excellent free kick on his left foot, giving them a two-goal lead going into the break. Despite heavy second half pressure from the home side, SVW stayed strong and held out to claim their third consecutive win at the Opel Arena.

Line-up: Head coach Alexander Nouri made two changes from last week's team. Club captain Clemens Fritz and Theodor Gebre Selassie returned to the starting eleven, with Milos Vejkovic and Santiago Garcia placed on the bench.  Werder were set up in a 4-4-2 formation. Robert Bauer and Gebre Selassie stationed as full back, and Lamine Sané and Niklas Moisander paired in the centre of the defence. Fritz sat next to Thomas Delaney in midfield, with Fin Bartels and Zlatko Junuzovic out wide, and Serge Gnabry playing in a free role off main striker Max Kruse.

Unconventional corner routine and outstanding Delaney free kick

The highlights:

2nd minute: Werder with the first small sight of goal in the match. Robert Bauer delivers a ball from some way outside the box to the arriving Serge Gnabry, who cannot connect with the ball.

10th minute: Werder are keeping compact in the opening stages, looking to allow Mainz as little room as possible while aiming to put together some fast-paced counters themselves. No clear chances but a threat lingers on the break and Werder have been solid so far in their own third.

16th minute: GOOOOOAAALL for Werder! Junuzovic lines up the corner and sends it beyond the far post towards the waiting Gnabry, who is stood around 15 yards from goal on the left side. The 21-year old catches the ball perfectly with his head and Mainz stand helpless as it loops into the net. A very well-planned routine from Werder.

23rd minute: DELANEY! What a brilliant strike! Werder are given a free kick around 20 yards out towards the right of the goal after Kruse is brought down. Delaney is allowed to strike it on his left foot and he unleashes a perfect strike, high into the net! 2-0!

31st minute: Jhon Cordoba battles his way through the defence and finds himself one-on-one with Felix Wiedwald. It look as though he is through, but the Werder goalkeeper acts quickly and decisively to close him down and block his shot. Great work!

39th minute: With a two-goal lead in their pockets, Werder are playing sensibly and with discipline. They have evaded any danger since the Cordoba chance and keeping Mainz frustrated.

45th minute: Half Time in Mainz. Werder are ahead and deservedly so. It has been a defensively strong first 45, complemented by two exceptional set pieces. SVW will need more of the same after the break.

Heart and commitment see Werder to the points

46th minute: The second half gets underway. Werder go out unchanged but Mainz make a substitution, taking off former Werder man Levin Öztunali, bringing on Pablo de Blasis.

50th minute: Fantastic from Wiedwald! A free kick comes into the box and despite being the smallest player in the area, De Blasis gets on the end of it. His header is aimed towards the bottom corner, but Wiedwald reacts quickly and pushes the ball clear.

51st minute: Millimeters from another! This time it is Werder's turn to threaten from a free kick. After a minor scramble Moisander gets a shot away which creeps under the body of Lössl. However, Stefan Bell throws himself backwards and scrambles it clear on the line. In the scrum, Thomas Delaney caught a knock to the head, eventually needing to be taken off on the stretcher and replaced by Maximilian Eggestein. Get well soon, Thomas!

56th minute: Things are becoming a little heated. Jairo Sampeiro receives a yellow card for a trip to break up a counter. Mainz are still probing for a way through but finding no joy.

60th minute: Junuzovic clears it off the line! Aaron Seydel heads the ball towards goal from a corner, but Junuzovic is doing his duty on the post and gets it away!

67th minute: Werder stride forward again as Bartels and Junuzovic combine, but they cannot turn it into another goal. They are finding space for themselves on the break as Mainz commit further forward.

76th minute: Milos Vejkovic comes on in place of Serge Gnabry as Werder look to close up shop and see out the final stages of the game, while Fritz receives a booking, meaning he will be suspended for the next game.

85th minute: Werder are mostly pinned back in their own third but still look dangerous on the counters they can forge. Almost there!

88th minute: Wiedwald again! De Blasis pops up in the penalty area with a header yet again, but like the last time, the Werder goalkeeper is equal to it, showing lightning reactions again to launch himself across his own goal and tip it clear. Werder race down the other end and make a chance, but Lössl blocks Kruse off.

90th+2 minute: Mainz have the ball in the net, but the linesman correctly rules Cordoba offside.

90th+3 minute: FULL TIME! The referee blows his whistle and confirms a massive win for SVW!

Summary: An excellent showing from Nouri's side right through the game. The two first half goals put them on the right track and a well-managed second half saw them through to the end. The team were compact and defensively rock solid, combined with dangerous and clinical forward play. Werder deserved the three points and the clean sheet that came with them. Their next match will be on Friday 24th February away to VfL Wolfsburg.
