3,700 Werder Bremen fans graced the away sections of the Opel Arena, and they stayed there celebrating with their team for some time after the final whistle. The feelings of relief and joy after the confirmation of Werder's first points of the calendar year were palpable and contagious. Frank Baumann commented that the 2-0 away win over 1. FSV Mainz "had lifted a weight" from them all, and the heart and spirit they showed on the pitch, combined with their impressive general play was cause for encouragement. But as it is the first win of the year, it cannot stop there. "We know that we made a small but major step today, and we need to work to make sure we keep progressing further," stated Werder head coach Alexander Nouri after the match.

The players, too, acknowledge the huge significance of the win and their delight with the performance - but also made clear that the performance and attitude on display must be carried into the next match against VfL Wolfsburg. WERDER.DE caught up with a few of them after the game to get their reactions on the match, the team's collective showing and what comes next.

On the run of the game:

Serge Gnabry: "We have been on a run of four consecutive losses and a lot of people were talking us down. It was important that we rose up again today. We made an effort to stay compact, cede the majority of possession and do our best to make an impact on the counter. We gave very little away, stood strong and did not allow them a route back into the game after taking the early lead, like we did against Augsburg. We fought until the very end and despite a few nervy moments, we definitely deserved our win."

Felix Wiedwald: "The two early goals were vital for us - they really boosted our confidence after the recent results we have had. We did not give them space and we played to our strengths very well. A positive result of course makes things easier as we go into the next week. We can go back home with a smile."

Theodor Gebre Selassie: "We are glad to have got the three points. Even Serge was a little surprised with himself that he could get such accuracy with his head! Thomas' goal was just briliant. We have been working hard on free kicks in training and he smashed a few in then just like the one in the game today. Perhaps we were a little too defensive in the second half but at the end, we kept a clean sheet. Two goals away from home is enough when you defend that well."

Robert Bauer: "We were excellent and really up for it from the very first moment today. Our style of play and ability was never in question, but today we also showed that we are capable of fighting."

Max Kruse: "We played with a lot of freedom and showed that we did not let the criticism we have had in recent weeks get to us. I cannot completely say that we played great football for the whole match - after going 2-0 up we played too many long balls and did not try to find our way out on the ground. Still, we showed a very strong starting point today."

Frank Baumann: "It was an excellent performance from everyone in the team. Today had perhaps a bit of fortune in the set piece situations but it is something that we have lacked in previous games. It is of course somewhat peculiar for a player of Serge Gnabry's height to be scoring with his head, but that is probably something he picked up with the Olympic coaches. Thomas' goal after that was also very important for us. We showed again the quality we have in our team, just as we did before the turn of the year. We cannot dwell on the euphoria now, but it is certainly a good feeling.

On the injury to Thomas Delaney:

Alexander Nouri: "He has been taken to the hospital with a suspected concussion. It was a bit of a shock moment. Naturally we have our fingers crossed that it is nothing to serious and he is back with us as soon as possible."

Clemens Fritz: "A lengthy absence for him would be difficult for the team, as could be seen today. But Thomas is tough, and we hope that it is not something we will have to worry too much about."

On the talk surrounding Alexander Nouri:

Alexander Nouri: "This is the kind of environment where there is always a lot of speculation. For me, the most important think is the truth about my relationship with the players and those with whom I work. I have a lot of fun working with the team - there is a strong bond with the players and there is a lot of good communication. We are all giving our very best for the club, that is unquestionable. It is all about the club rather than individuals."

Frank Baumann: "We have never had a discussion about the coach, it is all in the media and what they make of it, even after this win. It was clear to see today how Alex was able to help his team's self-confidence and bring out an high level of performance."

Robert Bauer: "He was the reason that we were so ready and motivated today and we played with such passion. Of course he is the right coach for us - and our performance today goes even further to show that."

The tasks ahead:

Serge Gnabry: "With today's win, we will go into the match against Wolfsburg with much higher confidence. We have worked hard in the last few weeks and will continue to work to our best to be successful. Hopefully we can do things this well again on Friday."

On the corner routine:

Serge Gnabry: "I am just a prodigious header of the ball! (Laughs) It was not rehearsed. We spoke briefly before the game and actually were unsure if anything would come of it - thankfully in the end it did!"

On the tactical switch:

Alexander Nouri: "We wanted to double our strength on the wings, stay compact with two deep central midfielders and from there accentuate our strength in transition play. I believe that it worked well because we played with discipline."
