The last matches of this international break have been played and the youngest Werder international had a day to remember. Niklas Schmidt scored three goals for the Germany U19s in their 4-0 win over Ireland. The 18-year old scored twice from the penalty spot (24’, 55’) and once from open play (52’). Another Werder player Johannes Eggestein played until the 79th minute. Frank Kramer’s team successfully completed the first of two qualifying rounds for the European Championship with the win. The next round will take place in March where eight teams will qualify for the finals of the European Championship in summer 2017.

Two Werder players, Serge Gnabry and Florian Grillitsch, faced each other in the qualifying fixture between Germany U21 and Austria U21 in St. Pölten. Grillitsch was taken off at half-time, whilst Gnabry came on for Germany in the 73rd minute. Germany U21s won 4-1 and completed a perfect qualification campaign with ten wins from ten matches. Austria will have to try and qualify for the European Championship finals next year through the play-off round.

Milos Veljkovic will also be playing in the European Championship finals in Poland for the Serbia U21s. The Serbia U21 side beat Slovenia 3-1. The Werder centre-back played the full 90 minutes. Grillitsch’s Austria and Veljkovic’s Serbia join Spain and Norway in the play-off round which will take place in November. The draw will take place on Friday at 13:00 CEST and there is a possibly that the two Werder players could face each other.

Izet Hajrovic won 2-0 with Bosnia and Herzegovina in a World Cup qualifying fixture against Cyprus. Hajrovic came on in the 64th minute. Thanos Petsos did not feature in Greece’s 2-0 away win in Estonia. Greece top Group H with nine points from three matches, ahead of second place Bosnia and Herzegovina with six points. Theodor Gebre Selassie played the full 90 minutes for Czech Republic in their 0-0 draw with Azerbaijan. However they stay in last place in Group C.

Lászlo Kleinheisler, who’s currently on loan from SVW at Darmstadt 98, was called up by Hungary for their games against Switzerland and Latvia. Kleinheisler was subbed off after 75 minutes in his country’s 3-2 loss to the Swiss, while in the away match in Riga, he was substituted on at half time to help his team to a 2-0 win. Danish midsielder Thomas Delaney, who will arrive in Bremen in January having already agreed a deal with the Green-Whites, suffered two bitter defeats with his country during this international break. The first came against Poland (3-2), a game in which he entered the field of play in the 82nd minute, while the second came against Montenegro (1-0) three days later and he played the whole 90 minutes.
