Santiago García will leave SV Werder at the end of the season. The left-back and Werder couldn’t agree to terms on a new contract to extend his current one, which expires in the summer. Director of sport Frank Baumann acknowledged the situation on Thursday morning.

“We would have very much liked to continue working with Santi. He was 100% a part of the club and always gave his best effort. Unfortunately we have been unable to agree on a new contract,” explained Baumann.

García, who will be wished farewell in Saturday’s home game against 1899 Hoffenheim, lamented the end of his time in Bremen: “A wonderful time is coming to an end for me and my family. I’ve always felt very comfortable here with the club, and it’s a shame that we couldn’t work out a deal to continue my time here. I wish Werder and the fans all the best.”

In 2013, Santiago García – firstly on loan, then permanently – joined SV Werder. Overall, the 28-year-old played 93 times for the Green-whites in the Bundesliga, and five times in the DFB-Pokal.
