It was a perfect evening for Lamine Sané in a number of ways. The Senegalese international, making his 18th Bundesliga appearance, was a key ingredient in Bremen’s 2-1 victory in Wolfsburg. For long spells, a victory wasn’t certain, as Wolfsburg pushed Werder back deep into their own half, but right in the middle of all this was the tall defender. “Lamine sacrificed himself for us,” praised Alexander Nouri after the game in the Volkswagen Arena.

On one of his few ventures forward that night, Sané helped assist Werder’s second goal by heading on Zlatko Junuzovic’s free-kick into the path of Serge Gnabry – it was Sané’s first assist since joining Werder from Bordeaux.

Afterwards, Sané was required to showcase his defensive qualities and he impressively demonstrated what an asset he can be for Alexander Nouri’s team. He not only won every single aerial duel he contested, but he was also unbeaten on the ground, winning a highly impressive 100 percent of his challenges. What's more, every single pass of his found a teammate. Enough reasons for Nouri to issue a few extra words of praise for the 29-year-old. “Lamine marched from the front, always managed to get into tackles and won many headers for us,” said the coach on Sané’s performance and added: “He showed a towering presence in defence and that’s extremely important in these types of games.”
