Frank Baumann also expressed his joy for the 26-year-old: “That was a great performance by Felix, as he kept us a clean sheet. In the last few weeks he’s often encountered misfortune, but today he deserves the recognition. Felix impressively displayed that he is there for the team even under pressure.”
Wiedwald radiated a sense of calm for the full 90 minutes. In the closing stages of the game he conceded a goal, but knew beforehand that it wouldn’t stand. “During that last shoot he allowed the ball to rebound, because he had already seen the linesman raise his flag,” Clemens Fritz explained with a grin. Wiedwald held on to Werder’s second clean sheet of the season and knows how important such a performance can be. “Victories and saves give assurance, that’s for sure,” said the Werder keeper.
Wiedwald made a strong case to also feature in Friday’s next match with VfL Wolfsburg. But the media speculation on who will become Werder’s regular keeper is nothing that concerns Wiedwald: “I don’t let any of that get to me. I always train as if I was going to play on the weekend. I give my best and in the end the manager has to decide.” In Mainz his “best” was definitely good enough.
