Werder were pushing right until the end of the game against a team in great form, and, for large parts of the game, defended solidly. Therefore, there were a few positives that Werder can take from the game. However after the encounter, nobody after the game wanted to say the 3-1 loss to RB Leipzig was "good". “There’s no such thing as a good defeat, it would be a contradiction to say that and that goes for today’s match,” said sporting director Frank Baumann. Fin Bartels also didn’t want to speak of a good performance. “When you lose, you can never speak positively about the game,” commented the 28 year old. At the end of the day, the game was decided by small margins.

However, Leipzig’s final goal came from the last kick of the game and, putting that aside, many including Bauman were able to start to reflect on the game positively. “In many ways we were able to build on the last few performances,” said Bauman, as he further praised Nouri’s “compact, disciplined and organised defence.”

WERDER.DE were in the mixed zone after the Green-Whites’ first competitive game at the Red Bull Arena and have put together the best quotes below.

On the game:

Alexander Nouri: “We knew what to expect. Leipzig are a team with an unbelievable amount of confidence and momentum behind them, they’re a super opponent with enormous quality upfront who are very versatile. Nevertheless, our performance wasn’t bad, we stood compact, were organised and disciplined. Many of Leipzig’s attacks came to nothing or ended in shots from distance but in the decisive moments we didn’t defend with enough conviction - we conceded their first goal too easily and I’m sure we could have defended it better. After winning the ball back in the first half, I would have wished for more confidence, we did that better in the second which made the game open again. Straight after the break, we could have equalised and were unlucky. However, I would have hoped for more courage in some situations so I’m not satisfied with that.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “We were hoping for more and are disappointed that we haven’t taken any points from the game. RB played very aggressively and were a little better on the day.”

Clemens Fritz: “It was an intense game. Their first goal was very lucky as the ball bounced off his leg. The second goal should never happen, but we reacted well, fought back and thew everything forwards at the end.”

Fin Bartels: “We didn’t give them any space and, until their first goal, didn’t allow them many chances. We had won the ball back just before their first goal, but the ball bounced around and fell to him nicely. There were some positives today but above all, we’re disappointed that we haven’t taken anything from the game.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “In the first half we only allowed them one chance and we did a lot right. With their first goal, we had won the ball back but Keita’s individual class allowed him to get through. Getting the balance between being defensively compact and attacking wasn’t easy and we didn’t always get it right. Leipzig enjoy being on the ball, particularly in midfield. With more luck, we could have taken something from the game as we were always in it and never gave up hope. Maybe in the first half we were a little too deep, even if we were compact – but this is the balancing act I mentioned earlier. In the second period we then opened up more and created more chances.

Frank Baumann: “At the start, we needed a couple of minutes to get into the game. After that, we were good over long stretches – we were only not close enough to our opponents during their goals.

On the mentality of the team:

Fin Bartels: “There’ll always be setbacks, this loss shouldn’t and won’t knock us off our stride. We have often shown in the past that we’ll continue to believe in ourselves and even today, after going two behind, threw everything at it until the end.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: “We’ll now look back and work on everything, discuss things and then redirect our attention to what’s ahead of us. I’m very optimistic that we’ll get the balancing act between defending and attacking right. Everyone is aggressive and wants to help their teammates, I think that our fans have seen how we fought and how dogged we were. Admittedly, we’re above all disappointed, but in my opinion this isn’t a setback.

Frank Baumann: “Today was a different game, but the mentality today was similarly as good as the game against Leverkusen. Above all, you saw after going two behind that the team didn’t give up.”

On the upcoming challenges:

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “We’ll play at home, where we’ve won twice in a row now, again against a promoted side. Our objective is very clear – to get our next points. We’ll work in the coming days to achieve this.

Alexander Nouri: “We have to closely analyse the goals we conceded, even I will have to look at it very closely again. In the coming weeks, our defensive solidity will be a main focus, I think you can see we already have a structure, but we have to work on it in the decisive moments.”

Zlatko Junuzovic: "We're still not where we want to be but we can't just give up and have to continue working just as hard. I think we can defend well against any opponent, even if that opponent is Dortmund or Bayern. We'll have to show that again against Freiburg - they're in form at the moment. Perhaps they'll allow our strikers a bit more too, I'm convinced we'll play a good game."

Frank Baumann: “The performance today, despite the result, can give us courage for the coming weeks, and then we’ll also have to up our game again.”

On Davie Selke’s performance:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “I didn’t know Davie could cross so well with his left foot like he did for their second goal. He's a good example for the great individual class and quality that Leipzig have in their squad – even from the bench. For me, that was a deciding factor today.”

Frank Baumann: “Personally I was happy for Davie but I would have been happier if he didn’t have anything to celebrate. The fact he didn’t celebrate after his goal shows me that he had a good time with us. I think that’s part of it.

On Felix Wiedwald’s performance:

Zlatko Junuzovic: “Felix hasn’t had the easiest time. Firstly, he lost his place and now he has to be completely focused again – that’s hard for him. Today and against Leverkusen he performed well in my opinion, with his save against Poulsen he made sure we didn’t go behind early on – that was very important for us. We need this solidity at the back and can always rely on Felix.”

Frank Baumann: “The way Felix has played in the last few weeks doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. Last season you saw that we can completely rely on him in even the toughest situations.”
