Play with ease, but don't let up

It’s official. Werder are staying in the Bundesliga. Thanks to the 2-0 win over Hertha Berlin, the Green-Whites have ensured another season in Germany’s top division. The interviews after the game were on a different, however: Europe. Kruse, Bartels and co. helped Werder move up to sixth in the table today and suddenly, the prospect of European football next season seems a little more plausible. „We have achieved our main aim which was survival. Everything we get now is a bonus. We won’t set a new target,” said head coach Alexander Nouri after the final whistle. “The team didn’t feel any pressure. There weren’t any negative thoughts going through the minds of the players,” explained Frank Baumann. The managing director is focused on the next few games, “We still have three difficult games ahead of us and we’ll see what happens.”

We summarised the thoughts of some of the key Werder players after the game.

On the game:

Fin Bartels: “That was the perfect start. Taking an early lead of course helped us. We were clinical going forward in the first-half. The second-half wasn’t so good. We tried our best, but we gave the ball away too often. In the end, we’re pleased with the win, but in Köln we will need two good halves.”

Felix Wiedwald: “It felt as though the game was decided after 20 minutes. I wanted us to put the game to bed on the counter, but we played intelligently once we had the lead. When you’re 2-0 up at home then, in my opinion, you’re allowed to take the sting out of the game. It’s credit to us that, at the moment, we’re in a position to do that.”

Robert Bauer: “At the start everything came together. We started the game very well, forced mistakes through our pressing and took the lead with a classy counter attack. Hertha came back a bit in the second-half. We knew that it would get harder so our aim was to keep a clean sheet. Hertha have a lot of quality in my eyes, but we deserved to win, we were the better team.”

Alexander Nouri: “I saw a very good first-half display in which we created our chances well, played well and had a good structure to our play. We weren’t intense enough in the second-half and we gave the ball away too cheaply when trying to attack. However, we concentrated hard and didn’t let much through and, in the end, deserved to win.”

Frank Baumann:
“I think we deserved to win today. From the 30th minute onwards we protected the lead a little too much for my liking, when we could have scored again. If you concede before the end when it’s 2-0 then it can get a little tense. But if you defend solidly when you have the lead then there’s no drama.”

On Europe:

Max Kruse: “The fans and everyone involved is of course allowed to dream of Europe. For me it’s just about focusing on the next game and training hard so that we’re prepared for it. Then we’ll see where we are at the end of the season. The opponents won’t get any easier and we have three tough games to come.”

Fin Bartels: “We should enjoy the moment. We probably wouldn’t have dreamt of this at the start of the season. For me personally it’s a little crazy because I’ve never experienced something like this before in my career. We should go into the next game relaxed and with excitement, not wanting to give the opposition an inch. We have three exciting games to come and we’re looking forward to them. We can’t be big-headed – that won’t achieve anything.“

Robert Bauer:
“We’ve said after the last few victories that we want to win every game. If we keep doing that, we’ll be playing in Europe next season. The game against Köln will be similar to today. If we pick up some points then it’ll be a huge step towards the Europa League.”

Alexander Nouri: “We need to be a tour best in every game and give top performances to collect as many points as possible. We’ll do well if we continue to focus on the next match and then we’ll see where we end up at the end of the season.”

Frank Baumann:
“The team is very stable at the moment and is doing very well. A big compliment should be paid to the team and the coaching staff. We now have three important games ahead of us and we’ll see where we are at the end of the season. We won’t be putting any undue pressure on ourselves.”

On the atmosphere at the Weser-Stadion:

Max Kruse: “At the moment it’s great. You can see that the fans and the city are behind the team. We’ll be supported through thick and thin. The fans appreciate our recent performances and that is a nice feeling.”
