Niklas Moisander has been around the block. He has played in the Champions League and made 51 appearances for his country. So when the experienced defender played in his first match at the Weserstadion on Wednesday evening, something happened that he had never seen before. “My debut was naturally something very special. Despite the disappointing result, we were greeted with encouraging applause in the changing room. So much support in such a difficult time; that is something I never saw during my time in Amsterdam or Italy at Sampdoria,” said the central defender during the press conference ahead of the match against VfL Wolfsburg.

Caretaker manager Alexander Nouri echoed Moisander’s words, emphasising how imperative it is that the team looks forward as quickly as possible after losing to the Zerofivers late on: “We improved significantly against Mainz compared to the other matches beforehand. If we can take the positives from that and play with the same morale and team spirit, then I am sure we will turn things around very soon.”

The 30-year-old is staying calm despite the current situation and the poor start to the season. “From my experience, it’s important to keep composed and to give the young players at the club confidence,” said Moisander on his role as a senior player in the Green-Whites squad.

Moisander personally had a shaky start to the season due to his long-lasting rehabilitation after his ankle operation, meaning that he repeatedly had to sit out in pre-season. After his first two appearances in the Bundesliga and the dismal DFB Cup performance, Moisander appears to have found his form: “Now I feel 100% fit and am ready for tomorrow!” Ready, hopefully to experience an great moment in the Weserstadion for the second time in his career.
