During the international break, national teams across the world will be preparing for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers for Russia 2018.  Some Werder players got going on Wednesday evening with friendlies before the campaign for qualification gets underway. Niklas Moisander led the Finland team out on the pitch against Germany, which Die Mannschaft were able to win 2-0. The game at Borussia Park in Mönchengladbach was also a farewell match for Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger as he made his 122nd and final appearance for Germany. Werder’s centre back played the entire 90 minutes of the match.

The Czech national team celebrated a 3-0 win on Wednesday evening against Armenia. Werder goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobný, who had initially just been called up to be in to be part of the squad, sat on the bench for the whole match. Theodor Gebre Selassie however was not able to contribute in this friendly. “Theo” was serving a suspension after he was sent off on 5th June 2016 following two yellow cards in a friendly against South Korea prior to the European Championships. He will be eligible for the Czech Republic for the first World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland this Saturday, 4th September 2016 (20:45 CEST).

Today (Thursday evening) is also the next time a Werder man is in action, with Thanos Petsos featuring in Greece’s friendly in the Netherlands.
