The Werder players left the pitch to

whistles and faint applause, the disappointment after the home defeat to FC Augsburg

was clear to see. The Green-Whites prepared well and wanted to get their first

win of the season on the second matchday. Sporting director Frank Baumann had

this to say after the match: “We started the game well and went into the break

with a deserved 1-0 lead. Even in the second half we had some good moments and

should have had a second penalty. We were caught out by a set-piece and lost

our thread. We’re very disappointed by the defeat.”

On the game

Viktor Skripnik: “The team is concerned and disappointed by the loss. Until their equaliser, we had played a good game, it was a clear improvement from the last few games. The lads approached the game well, we were compact and deserved out lead. Then we found ourselves trailing after two set-pieces. Unfortunately for us, we have left the game empty-handed. You can compare the game to the one last season against Augsburg, as today we also lost unnecessarily. Today, they were somewhat luckier, but good and bad luck exists in football. We won’t get carried away despite the tough situation we’re in, we’ll continue to work.

Frank Baumann: “We started the game well and went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead. Even in the second half we had some good moments and should have had a second penalty. We were caught out by a set-piece and lost our thread. Unfortunately, we haven’t been solid enough yet and the many new signings need more time to gel as a team. It’s a shame, that we leave the game empty handed but today’s performance was better in many ways.”

Clemens Fritz: “In the first half we did a lot right. We were set up well and were aggressive in the challenges, after the break however, we lacked vigour. The fact we conceded from a set-play is particularly bitter, as the coach warned us about that and we had trained on it during the week. We’ve picked ourselves up in the past and we’ll do it again.

Florian Grillitsch: “We are all disappointed. We went in at half-time with a deserved 1-0 lead and we intended to go one better. However then we conceded again from a set-piece. That is unnecessary and It can’t keep happening.”

Aron Johannsson: “We had the game under control and also had chances to score a second goal. We need to win games like this.”

Serge Gnabry: “We had the game under control but then we let it slip. We are all disappointed. We should have started the second half as strongly as we finished the first, however unfortunately we didn’t manage to do that.”

On the jeers after the whistle

Frank Baumann: “The fans supported us very well throughout the match. It’s completely understandable that they are disappointed about the loss.”

Clemens Fritz: “The reaction of the fans is understandable. We kept them in suspense for a long time. I can only say that we’re sorry and we will stay focused and work hard. We have to understand why there were jeers and dissatisfaction.”

Viktor Skripnik: “Jeers and criticism are all part of the game. We accept the reaction of the fans. We are disappointed ourselves.”

Serge Gnabry: “We have to give it our all in the next match to get the fans back on our side.”

On Luca Caldirola’s injury

Frank Baumann: “It didn’t look good. Luca is now in hospital and it’s suspected that he has broken his fibula. We are crossing our fingers that it’s not actually that bad. It is horrible news for Luca and yet another setback for us.”

Dirk Schuster: “I’d like to wish Luca Caldirola all the best on behalf of the whole team. He is a brilliant sportsman and I hope that he recovers as quickly as possible.”

On the referee’s decision before Augsburg’s first goal

Serge Gnabry: “I hope that it was the right decision because it could have changed the game. I haven’t seen it properly myself to form an opinion.”

Viktor Skripnik: “Everyone made mistakes today, including the referee. But he made the decision and we have to accept that. We can’t just switch off, we have to keep going.”
